Product Description

Product Description

On a technical level Wes brought a style famous for block chords and octaves played with the thumb, taking a different approach from masters Lang, Christian and Kessel, on a musical level he brought so much more to the landscape of Jazz guitar. These three albums represent his finest recordings over an eighteen month period for Riverside after his stints with Lionel Hampton and his orchestra and before he became a little less in favour with Jazz aficionados and a little more so with the easy listening crowd.

Wes Montgomery was perhaps best known for the commercial, orchestrated, easy-listening albums he put out after the demise of Riverside, but it is his earlier work with that label that earned him his reputation as one of the great jazz guitarists of all time. And this package - three original Riverside albums in one - includes enough material to confirm that this reputation is well deserved.:

So Much Guitar! is the one I like most - in addition to the quartet of guitar, piano, bass (Ron Carter) and drums, it features Ray Barretto on conga which really intensifies the groove, especially on the two opening tracks, Twisted Blues and Cotton Tail. And Wes's playing is outstanding throughout.

Second best is The Incredible Jazz Guitar of WM - same instrumentation as So Much Guitar (minus the congas) and a generally very modern sound. Stand-out tracks include Airegin and the Montgomery original Four on Six.

Lastly, there is Movin' Along, a more conservative set with the usual instrumentation (albeit with different personnel each time) plus James Clay on flute and tenor sax. This set has a traditional flavour which is not always to my taste and can sound a bit dated - except on Tune-up and a delicious rendition of Ghost of a Chance.

All in all, a great package, both as an introduction to Wes Montgomery and as a collector's item that includes some of his finest work.

Solid three album set from Wes' later Riverside era 26 Sept. 2013
By Mike Tarrani - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a three disc set that contains an album on each disc. There are no sound samples on this page so I am going to link to the original album product pages which contain sound samples. The sound quality on the three discs in this set is uniformly excellent and beautifully mastered (to my ears).

DISC ONE contains the album titled Incredible Jazz Guitar (20 Bit Remaster) that was recorded for Riverside at the Reeves Sound Studios in NYC on January 26 and 27, 1960. Wes is backed by a strong rhythm section comprised of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Al Heath on drums. You can listen to sound samples on tracks 17 through 24 of a compilation titled The Jazz Collection.

DISC TWO contains the album titled Movin Along that was recorded for Riverside at the United Recording Studios in Los Angeles on October 12, 1960. Wes is accompanied by James Clay on tenor sax and flute, and backed by Victor Feldman on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. According to one discography Wes also played bass guitar on some tracks. Click on the link to the album linked to listen to sound samples.

DISC THREE contains the album titled So Much Guitar! (Original Jazz Classics Remasters) that was recorded for Riverside at the Plaza Sound Studios in NYC on August 4, 1961. Wes is backed by a solid rhythm section comprised of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Lex Humpheries on drums and Ray Barretto on congas. Sound samples for this album can be heard on tracks 45 through 52 of a compilation titled The Jazz Collection.

As you can see (and hear if you checked out the sound samples) this is a excellent selection of Wes' work for Riverside in the 60-61 time frame. He is still playing pure jazz and had yet to add a more commercial flavor. To my ears this is a golden era in his too-short career.

Great collection of great Wes Montgomery tracks 2 Mar. 2014
By Stephen F. Heil - Published on Amazon.com

I bought a copy of this for my Dad for Christmas. He said he loved it which is a strong endorsement given that he has seen Wes play live in his younger years. I ended up buying a copy for myself too. Great stuff!

Wonderful music from old Wes. Good recording. Better sound than some of the originals. This is a real find. Go for it.

Great Value For the Wes Fan 25 Oct. 2014
By Saxman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This reasonably priced boxed set of 3 classic Wes Montgomery classic guitar albums is a great buy. I think I paid around $10 for this set from Amazon itself. No bonus alternate takes (which I'm TOTALLY fine with), just the complete Riverside studio master recordings of Wes as leader with piano groups, NO organ stuff, thank the Lord. Mel Rhyne has his fans, but I'm not one of them. Greater value of Wes straight ahead and fire cannot be found in a studio setting, save for the small group material on Verve, which I do not believe has been recollected on CD. There you get Wes with Jimmy Smith, which is incredible (the big band stuff with Smith and Wes you can keep). However, what is found here will delight The King of Guitar Octaves and Taste, Sir Wes Montgomery! Buy this one NOW before it's gone.
A Jazz Giant 28 Dec. 2014
By Ricky J. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Three albums from a jazz guitar giant at an affordable price. What's not to love? Just add it to your cart and enjoy the tunes. Good sound quality on the recordings. It's Wes. What more do you need to know?
