This is a good album. This is a very good album and it comes thoroughly recommended to anyone who has heard a lot of positive noises made about this outrageoulsy gifted (and still young) tenor saxophonist, and who wants to listen for themselves. Unfortunately, he has yet to come close to the high standards which this album set upon its release. His sound is instantly recogniseable, and his phrasing owes much to the likes of Rollins, Coltrane and Dexter Gordon. The tunes are lovingly rendered with a sympathetic band of young and technically blessed musicians, such as Greg Hutchinson on drums and pianist Kevin Hays. The overall sound is clean and pleasing on the ear, owing much to the engineers at the recording studios. The take of 'I feel good' is worth a second and third hearing for the shear 'umph' it gives the album, but the highlights are the first two tunes which are original compositions. Blues on Sunday is actually an upbeat introduction with intelligent soloing and a laid back attitude which characterises the album as a whole. Wish is a slower, more reflective track showcasing his lucious sound.

The usual rendition of Body and Soul goes by almost unnoticed, but the duo with Christian McBride's fat bass for On the sunny Side of the Street is a fun exercise in showmanship, as horn and bass do battle in a duel of wit and technique.

And afterwards? He has followed this album up with several listenable albums (particularly Wish and Moodswing), and his cameos on other people's albums are always worth listening to, but his exploration of pop oriented repertoires has left me a bit cold. I hope he makes as big a splash with a future standards + originals album, as he did when this was first released.

Redman Shows The Talent That He Is Made Of. 2 July 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I think the Record shows the talent that Redman has and the potential that he has to become a driving Sax influence in the future. In this album he demonstartes the skill level that he has attained as a professional sax player along with sounding great with his Coltranelike style.

Joshua Redman's first album is awesome! 12 Sep 2003
By pat sharp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This album was recorded and released by Warner Brothers not long after Joshua won the T. Monk jazz competition. I think it's an all around strong and entertaining 1st album. Joshua Redman is the bomb! He's so chill and watching him on the Ken Burns Jazz interviews he seems like a really cool dude. {I heard he got straight A's in school!} This self titled album also has another really bomb musician... Christian McBride on bass! My favorite numbers are the covers actually. Blues on Sunday I think is an original though. What an awesome song to stretch out on. It sounds alot like the solos on "Blue Train" from back in '57. Its so cool that these "young lion's" did James Brown's "I feel good" its so funky and joyus! {probably McBride's suggestion!} Their version of Dizzy's "Salt Peanuts" is just slammin! they really cook on that one! It makes me crack up when they shout it at the end "salt peanuts salt peanuts!" Redman plays a really pleasant duet with McBride during "On the sunny side of the street" These guys are some of the coolest cats in modern jazz! They can play very serious in a straight ahead manner. But they can get really funky and avant guard sounding as well! This Cd has it all standards, ballads, original compostions, blues, and funky old school RandB! What a great first album from a young and very gifted tenor saxaphonist!

A Good Intro to Jazz 4 Aug 2009
By Karl W. Nehring - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Joshua Redman is the son of noted sax man Dewey Redman, but he clearly has the talent to make it on his own. On his self-titled debut CD, he fronts a standard tenor sax quartet with Kevin Hays on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Featuring both standards and original compositions (and throwing in a marvelous rendition of James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)" for good measure), Joshua Redman is the perfect introduction to jazz for those who have not had that much exposure to it. No, it is not at all watered down, but it has a way of communicating across musical styles that should appeal to a wide audience.
