This book is, quite simply, excellently written. Anita Brookner must be one of the most honest writers I've read. She analyses her characters with great depth and a sincerity that is often cruel ans unresting. However, nothing is ommitted from her characters; all their feelings, fears, resignations and adjustments are bared for the readers. The novel is pessimistic, but strangely compelling. Events happen and the people make decisions that so ruthlessly demand adjustment from the people involved. But all the characters have their reasons for what they do; there are no question marks because Brookner describes them so well, although at the same time there seems to be some other force playing with their lives, something quite stronger than themselves.
