If like me you've upgraded your PC over the years and been left with a few hard drives knocking about then this is a brilliant little peripheral. Having upgraded my PC last year I not only had a spare SATA drive, I also had a nice new USB 3 port which hasn't yet had any USB 3 peripherals plugged into it.

Setup is really easy and there's no messing about, no software to installation, no tools required and no additional cables to buy as you get a power cable and USB 3 cable in the box. Just plug it into your USB drive (USB 2 or 3) and it's ready to use. It has a power switch on the back which is brilliant if you are only going to use this occasionally, it means you can leave it all plugged in without it using power, just switch it on when ready.

Using it is also easy, just take your SATA drive and pop it into the dock, you'll feel a small amount of resistance as it plugs in and then you hear the drive spin up. Couple of moments later and the PC will bring up the Autoplay 'what do you want to do...' box allowing you to use your SATA drives as you would a USB stick.

I've been using this with my Windows 7 PC, but as you'll see from my video I've also tested it with my Android tablet, the Asus EeePad Transformer Prime TF201 10.1 inch Tablet with Keyboard/Dock - Grey (Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad Core 1.3GHz, RAM 1GB, Storage 32GB eMMC, WLAN, BT, Webcam, Android 3.2). Again, there was nothing complicated to do, I just plugged it into the USB port, popped a drive in the dock and the tablet recognised it and treated it in the same way it would treat a USB stick.

This review relates to the single dock version of this Inateck hard drive docking station - a double dock version is also available.

In the box you get the dock, a USB 3.0 lead, a feedback invitation from Inateck and a UK power adaptor (CE/TUV marked) which delivers 12V at 2amps. Out of the box the immediate impression is one of quality and the dock itself looks well made featuring a red "GTI" stripe around the disc aperture with a blue LED power indicator. This dock will look good on your desk too and is CE/RoHS marked. Around the back of the dock is a USB 3.0 socket, power input and on/off switch - this switch is useful if you want to leave the dock connected, plus, although you can "hot swap" discs, it's useful for changing discs over. The dock will accept 2.5" (laptop size) and 3.5" (desktop size) SATA (I-III) hard drives up to 4TB.

I have tried this device using an HP desktop PC running Windows 7 and a Toshiba laptop running Windows 8. I must confess to having gone on a bit of a nostalgia trip having gone through the 8 or so hard drives I've collected from our old PCs. It's so easy - once you've connected the dock you just insert the bare hard drive and it shows up on the PC in the same way as inserting a memory card or stick - you are then free to browse the drive and access pictures and documents etc. Access to data is quick and many files bring memories flooding back - either of things at home or crisis's at work etc. The fact that the drive is not enclosed assists with ventilation and, so far, the dock has worked with all the drives I've used. Very neat and efficient plus this device also claims Mac compatibility although I have not tested that aspect.

If your requirement is simply to browse old drives like me, then the single dock version is ideal - if you intend cloning drives, then the dual dock version is the one to go for.

This device gives an impression of being well made by Inateck and performs perfectly. Recommended.

Very easy and straight forward to use. Do not require any extra cables or drivers to install.

In the box you get docking station itself, USB 3.0 cable and power adapter.

It works with both Mechanical Hard Drives and SSD Drives.

It supports all major Windows Operating Systems from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 and supports Mac as well.

It's running on USB 3.0 interface, also supports USB 2.0 and lower.

Was quite unusual to have internal hard drive to be plugged into this but it works well and performance is good with reasonably good speeds on my PC.

In my particular case I was testing equipment on 8 years old AMD computer using USB 3.0 PCI Card on Windows 7 Ultimate Operating System.

Did not experienced any problems. Both drives were recognised, up and running within a few moments.

Overall, I cannot find any bad points. It just works.

Disclaimer: This product was sent to me by the Manufacturer / Supplier for an honest and unbiased review.

What is it and what does it do?:
This product is a compact, high speed, hard drive docking station with cloning function that is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems.

Contents:
- FD2002 Docking Station
- USB 3.0 Data Cable
- Mains Power Adapter
- Instruction Manual

Quality:
During the unpacking process it was evident that the product is made of very high quality material and is with the best that I have seen. It's constructed of a matt, black, lightweight plastic and resembles a high end toaster at first glance. The product is about the same length and width as a Mini iPad and a similar depth to the length of your thumb.

Design:
The design is reasonably simple with all the buttons, ports, LEDs and insert slots being located on 2 of the 6 surface panels. The rear of the unit contains the ON/OFF switch, the DC12V port (for charging) and the USB 3.0 port which connects the Docking Station to your Laptop or Desktop computer via the USB 3.0 Data Cable (supplied).

The upper surface panel of the unit contains a 'clone button', Power LED, Data transfer progression LEDs and the entry slots for the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). There is a single rubber pad in all 4 corners of the base which will prevent the product from sliding on smooth surfaces such as desks and tables.

Instructions:
The instructions are well written and are presented in a small instruction booklet. The information contained is clear and concise and is presented in a text, tabulated and image formats.
