Pats best album? 11 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
Absolutely cracking album and her best work ever. Good mix of ballady tracks and rockier ones. I bought this when on holiday in USA over ten years back and i still listen regularly, anyone who has ever like any of Pats work should have this in their collection.

You could break Pat Benatar's recording career into three sections. The first three albums would be the hard rock section (`In the Heat of the Night', `Crimes of Passion', `Precious Time'). The second, the synth pop section (`Get Nervous', `Tropico', `Seven the hard way'). And the third, which 1997's `Innamorata' completes, would be the adult rock section (`Wide Awake in Dreamland' and `Gravitys Rainbow' being the first two).

`Innamorata' is the least impressive of these three and least sophisticated, though it is certainly anything but bad. Having ceased working with founding drummer, Myron Grombacher (and composers for hire), the song-writing on this effort falls to Benatar and her husband/producer/guitarist, Neil Giraldo. Throughout her career, this had always produced uneven results and they rear their head again here. There is definitely an edge missing. On this album, it is mainly in the lyrics, which suffer from being less finessed than they had been on its two predecessors. There is also a tendency to over-sentimentalise and to "wo-o-oo-wo" and even "la-la-la" a little too often.

However, once you get over this (which took me quite some time), the songs take on a life of their own and a sassy style of sorts begins to shine through. Though it definitely rocks, there is an over-riding laid back sense about `Innamorata', with acoustic guitars generally taking the place of the hard electric distortion of her earlier career. There are some nice Latin and salsa rhythms at play in some tracks, while elegantly subtle keyboard embellishments boost many of the arrangements, even if songs occasionally go on too long.

The opening track, `Only You' is pretty awful, but things improve after that. The best tracks reflect the moodiness of mid range rockers on the previous two albums. `Purgatory', with its clever use of religious symbolism, is truly fine. But nothing else really soars. `I Don't Want to be Your Friend', `Strawberry Wine' , `Dirty Little Secrets' and `Angry' (the chorus of which is more than a little reminiscent of 'I'm Not Angry' off Elvis Costello's first album) also stand out. The initially naff and embarrassingly saccharine `Papa's Roses' even benefits from many listens (but the closing `Gina's Song' is just too much - too clucky and "doting parent" - just completely unnecessary).

Once you get used to it, though, `Innamorata' is quite listenable. It's just not quite among her best. (2.5 stars)

This is the best love album that pat has eva recorded, despite being 45 years old and with 2 kids when she recorded this album, pat still kicks ass. ONLY U,is a brilliant song to start the album of(after the intro)its full of love between her and neil(her husband),then its RIVER OF LOVE,pat belts out this song, really great guitar playing from neil. STRAWBEEY WINE,is a brilliant song, the words r very strong and loved up,the video to this is also great, with just neil and pat in there. PAPA'S ROSES is the most sweetest song that pat and neil have eva wrote, the song is based on a book called Geek Love, which pat had read, its about a man and is wife working in a circus and they want to set up their own freek show,so when she get pregnant, she takes all types if different pills to make ur children deformed, its a very sad story,a great book.pat has poured her heart out in this song, the words are so soft and sweet, this is the courus'like papas roses, soft and pale, like petals thrown in the dirt, only silence is spoken here, all that grows here is hurt and papas roses' Only thing i dont like about this album is when pats duaghter haley(13 at the time)sang on the end song, which is called GINA'S SONG,its spoils the album abit, its only for 20 seconds, all she says is 'i love u mama,i love u papa',its annoying, but apart from that,i love this album,im only 19 and iv got all pats album. This one stand out a mile becuase its the best. The lyrics to this whole album are meaningfull and respectful. The live cd which was recorded in 1980,is a really good live album of pats and her voice sounds excellent and neil on guitar is just brilliant, especially on LITTLE PARADISE AND HELL ID FOR CHILDREN. This live cd is the best live performance from the 80's from pat, well, next to her 1988 philly performance which is a knock out. All i can say is if u like mushy songs and a good cry now and then, buy this cd,u wont regret it,I PROMISE.
