2.0 out of 5 stars Worst Bible I've come across 9 Jun 2009
I bought this on the strengh of Gruman's past work with Quark. Big mistake. This is the worst Bible book I've ever bought. Poorly structured and so much basic stuff missing it is very unhelpful. Illustrations are so small they are useless. Fails to explain the interface properly and what does exactly what and then goes into detail on topics that are rarely required.

I keep this next to me at all times. It is great. The spine can't handle the weight of the book, but I can live with that!

5.0 out of 5 stars InDesign CS4 Bible 3 Feb 2010
By Tired of Defrag - Published on

This is an extremely well-written technical manual. The author obviously knows his subject thoroughly. I especially appreciate his macro-to-micro technique, starting out with an overview, then progressing to the nitty-gritty. Before ever using InDesign, I read this book cover-to-cover. As an old Pagemaker ("Ragemaker") user, I found this book to be an essential companion to the excellent CS4 software. I don't know if the author will read this, but I do have three minor complaints. Nowhere in the book is the term "folio" explained (I'm displaying my lack of knowledge on this, but I had to resort to Google to find out). Also, I've had a lot of trouble applying library objects and the book hasn't been helpful on this subject. The third is that sometimes the Index--which I consider essential to any tech manual--does not completely reflect the content of the book. Overall, even with these slight annoyances, the author gets an A+ from me.

Otherwise there is a lot of good information and am not sorry I purchased it for a reference book.
5.0 out of 5 stars I use this book as its title 28 Jan 2013
By Roath Kanel - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Well, I use this book as its title because I can't read all of its topic during the time that I get involve in printing business. I just read to the point that need when I tackle any obstacle in document creation. With background from Microsoft word, publisher and adobe pacemaker, I could understand this software very fast.

Te reason that I give this book 5 stars because before begin the chapter 1, an author include the quick start section which get me through document creation until printing process... So, from 0 experience with indesign cs4, I could understand and create document for my customer just spend one day to read the quick start and start to do my work. The remain point just read as need only.

Good job for the author...

It's a BIG LONG book and hard to find things or understand - but as I use it I'm getting the hang of it. If you buy it, prepare to spend lots of time learning the book itself!
