Product Description

A RITA award finalist for Best Contemporary Romance from Romance Writers of America. Barbara Samuel's first women's fiction, writing as Ruth Wind.

Looking for the Past...

Ellie Connor is a biographer with a special talent for piecing together fragments of the past. Her latest project, though, promises to be her most challenging—and personal. Not only is she researching the life of a blues singer who disappeared mysteriously forty years ago, but Ellie is also trying to find the truth about the parents she never knew. The love child of a restless woman who died young and an anonymous father, Ellie has little to go on but a faded postcard her mother sent from a small East Texas town—the hometown of her latest subject.

Could Mean Finding Her Future...

It is there that Ellie meets Blue Reynard, a man with deep roots and wide connections who may help her find answers. With a piercing gaze and cool grin, Blue is as sultry and seductive as the Southern night air. Beneath his charming surface, however, lies a soul damaged by loss. Despite her better judgment, Ellie finds herself irresistibly drawn to Blue's passion—and his pain. But Ellie's been lured by sweet talk and hot kisses before. How can she possibly stay with Blue when every instinct tells her to run?

4-1/2 stars GOLD
With a writing style that is both lyrical and evocative, Ruth Wind makes her much-anticipated mainstream debut. Ms. Wind, (aka Barbara Samuel) seems born to produce novels that enrich us with their complex emotions and dramatic characterizations. A must-read book! -- Reviewed By: Jill M. Ruth Wind has always been a favourite of mine. Her stories are more than just exciting romances. They allow you to experience different cultures in a way that makes you feel part of them. Her shorter romances are good, but this 400 page book is exceptionally so. I started reading it after supper and tried to stop at midnight. But each chapter kept pulling me further into the story. When I finished the book at 5.30 a.m. I felt that I had been part of the experience with the characters.

Ellie Connor and Blue Reynard are a little unusual as the hero and heroine of a romance. She is the serious biographer of a blues singer who disappeared in mysterious circumstances. He has a bit of the "Bronte" touch in his tortured past. Tracing the blues singer brings a poignancy to the story, particularly as it coincides with Ellie's underlying search for her own parents. This is a 21st century romance with a bit of nostalgia.

Like all good romantic fiction, the story takes you to the brink before one or two coincidences lead to the happy ending for Ellie and Blue. Nevertheless, the story is very credible and left me feeling a little weepy, with a lump in the throat.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indelible emotional experience 6 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In the Midnight Rain introduced me to a world of real people, with no glossing over the history between them and a real feel for the modern context and reality. In Blue Reynard Ruth Wind has created a well rounded and emotionally stunning man, and physically...be prepared for steamheat! But it's Ellie Connor and her search for the truth about a mysterious long gone blues singer and her no less long gone mother that is the core of this book. She is an absolute delight. I laughed with her, and yes, I cried...at one time in a first class business carriage full of men barking down their mobile phones! Please read this book if you want to feel the heart of a young woman beating, and to share the desperate need for belonging.

3.0 out of 5 stars great characters but ended too abruptly 19 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book and when I got to about 70% of it, I thought there was yet more to come. Sadly the author wrapped it up way too quickly and 25% of the 'book' is dedicated to excerpts from her other books. It was like she though carefully about the characters and storyline and then didn't know how to end it so just stopped. Disappointing.
