5.0 out of 5 stars A genius story teller 6 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
My first Richard Laymon I read and I did it in a day! Could not put it down - Looks like I came to races late, because I've only just started to read his books, but he is a class act. His characters are real life people with all the flaws intact. This book reminded me of of a cross between the film's 'The Game' and 'Saw'. I could not put it down, as I have since discovered with his other books. Love the way he throws you straight into the story - No toe dipping here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-stop excitement.....!!!! 6 Sep 2003
By Kevin
Format:Paperback
WOW!!! This was a great book...I couldnt stop reading...I turned the pages so fast I thought the book would catch fire. I came across a one star review..."WOW" I thought....this reviewer must have read a complete different book than the one I just read...

The main character is great and very likeable...MOG plays on her greed and sucks her into a very interesting game. ( MOG ) being Master of games. I dont want to give away to much information so I will stop here. I can tell you this...Jane the main character is taken on a whirlwind of a ride, her greed pushes her beyond reason. She falls prey to an ever growing danger in each phase of the game.

Laymon is a master story teller...as for the reviewer who gave this one star all I can say is "WOW"...maybe you should switch to a different genre....horror may not be to your liking...Laymon is the "KING"....no one comes close.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 STAR STORY 29 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the second Laymon book I have read (previously read Body Rides). Having only read two, my perspective is a little limited, but on his showing so far I would note the following about his work; - the "story" shines through, the "story" is gripping, the "story is quality". Secondly, I'd say his writing style is very straight-forward, no nonsense, simplistic even - very easy to get to grips with, you certainly don't need to be literary genius or conniseur to understand Laymon's work. And my last point on his showing so far is this - there seems to be a lot of fairly low key, yet graphic, sexual content that is really rather superflous to the story...

But withe regard to IN THE DARK - well... A superb story, superbly crafted with some sort of conflict in every scene. The story really is top drawer - I found myself saying "It couldn't happen like this, could it?" - and my answer was always "yes"... How far would you go when the money being offered to you doubled each time until in the end you're looking at an inviting Half A Million Dollars - and thats the theme, greed and perversion - will good win over evil. And it's that conflict, I think, that really makes this such a wonderful story. Do you turn your back on the "relatively easy money", abide by law and good social conventions - or do you bend the law a bit, break with convention?

The only downside for me is the unnecessary sexual references - there is some "sex" relevant to the story - but as in Body Rides, I did find myself often asking "why is he telling me this?" - and often I found myself unable to give an answer. On top of that - there were one or two characters introduced along the way that I felt were going to play a part in the story at a later time - they didn't......

Conclusion - Great Story, well-crafted, simply written, very enjoyable read. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gripping Stuff 26 Jan 2007
By Pete A
Format:Paperback
What a tragedy that Mr Richard Laymon is no longer in this world. He has to have been one of the greatest writers of this genre of all time.I don't understand why his books have not done better than they have especially with the trash that a certain Stephen King likes to produce these days.On that subject I wouldn't even put this author in the same league as Stephen King as Richard Laymon books are interesting and actually make sense.People who write reviews on Stephen King books and give them five stars have obviously not read this multi talented writer.Laymon's books are renound for being very gory and perhaps containing some scenes in them that would read like an 11 year old boys wet dream but having said that his writing is so rich that you can see straight past this and appeciate just how good a writer he really is.The thing that he is most good at is holding the readers attention right the way through the book.I have never picked one of his books up and got through the first chapter and thought I would put it down. His books seem to be the sort that you find totally impossible to put down.It is as if every Richard Laymon book has sticky glue on the cover and it makes it impossible for you to put it down. This book is not an exception to this rule.As the story starts you are already wondering where all this is going to lead and the writer takes you on a rollercoaster journey to get yo there. You can relate directly to the main character because you know that you would probably do exactly the same thing in her situation.I mean if you were given instruction that you could find money somewhere without really having to do anything you'd go looking wouldn't you! Of course as the price of the prize mounts so does what is at stake.... Read more ›

The first book I read from Laymon was "Dreadful Tales" and I can say that it is maybe the best short-story horror collection I have ever read. Fast-paced, funny, intriguing and full of twists, his shorts stories are really fun to read. I liked that book so much that I ordered other three books from Mr. Laymon according to the better-reviewed in amazon. "Fiends" was nice as it had more short-stories, but the selftitled novella included in it was far from good. Then I read "Funland", to my likes waaaay too long for the story it has to tell. And finally I have read "In the dark", according to some reviewers the best Laymon novel. I just can't understand it. It is obvious that if you are reading Laymon you are just looking for something very easy to read and will never find such depth as you can find in King novels, for example. And that's fine with me, I love beach-readings. But this novel is mainly absurd. Full of pages about how the lead character showers herself, and utterly dissapointing because the really nice premise never has it desserved great conclusion. I guess it is not bad enough to stop reading (I can stop reading a book if I don't like it, and I carried on with ITD till the end), but that is because of the infantile writing style, which you can actually read while you think about something else. Or maybe is because the premise is so good that it really hooks you and you want to know who the hell is this Master of Games. When you discover it, it is so irrelevant/unexplainable/unbealivable that you feel you've lost your time. At least, that's what has happened to me. So I think I have given Laymon some good chances to become a constant reader of his, but now I feel kind of let down.... Read more ›
