A very unusual book telling the story of a boy who does not learn to talk when he is young due to the circumstances in which he grows up. He senses that there is a lot of pain surrounding his mother and this gradually unfolds. We accompany this child and later the young man on his journey through life where he tries to find a position independent from his parents. Whenever he feels that he
has found a way of life that seems to be his own he starts to look for something else, but eventually he does find fulfilment.

Good overview of post WWII East Germany 28 Feb. 2013

I took a long time to read the book and tended to become a part of the "family". It has been called a modern day "Buddenbrooks" and seems to fit this description.
