It would be easy to underestimate the influence of Yazoo: only two albums and a handful of singles before they went their separate ways. Like all great bands, Yazoo was a combination of individually brilliant musicians. The juxtaposition of Moyet's powerhouse bluesy voice with Clarke's minimal yet funky electronics was a kind of proto-house music but a good three years before Detroit and Chicago took to the dancefloor.

However, it's simply great songwriting that underpins the Yazoo sound - 'Only You' being the best example - an instant classic when in was released in 1982. Personally, I love the soaring, exuberant pop of tracks such as 'Don't Go' and 'Situation' as well as the brooding melancholy of 'Midnight' or 'Ode To Boy'. If, like me, you're a fan of electronic and dance music, listen to Yazoo and you'll appreciate their influence on plethora of artists and producers who followed - right up to the present day. This is a sound investment for any self-respecting music fan. Even if you've got the original vinyl releases.

Having been a Yazoo collector for years, this box set sadly doesn't feature any tracks or remixes that I don't already own on cd. The biggest omission to me is the wonderful "Get Set" they recorded for a BBC show. With all the BBC performances featured on In Your Room, I was extremely disappointed to see that Get Set had not been included.

Having said that, I was very excited about hearing both Yazoo albums remixed in 5.1 stereo. These surround versions are very different in some places to the stereo mixes, to a point where whole notes are missing, parts are mixed into the background to being almost in-audible, and other parts that were background noises before, now become lead sounds. In some cases it works out beautifully, in others it is very annoying to find your favourite sound practically gone from the mix (the rhythmic, crispy synth sound right before "Hey baby!" in Walk Away From Love!). Also listen to the intro of Walk Away From Love; the drums and bass crash in quite crudely, where originally it builds up very smoothly.

Then, there is the overall extreme compression of the 5.1 mixes, making them sound extremely "in your face". This is especially obvious on Vince's voice in I Before E Except After C, making it almost uncomfortable to listen to.

So, are these mixes an improvement? I think they are a very interesting re-interpretation, and offer insight into the tracks, giving you the chance to hear certain parts for the first time, Alison's voice sounding very clear and crisp. You'll discover bits you didn't realize were in there (even extra dialogue in Ode To Boy, right after "that I'm in awe of his despair"!)

All in all, still a great buy, even for the avid collector like me.

Fall in love with Yazoo all over again with this wonderful package.

The DVD mixes of the albums bring a whole new life to the songs, and lift the keyboards and synths to another level not previously heard.

Lovely booklet with rare photo's, lyrics etc.

DVD Interview is a great telling of the Yazoo story.

An incomplete history of Yazoo to the date of release, "In Your Room" presents the albums, as is, in their UK configurations, in remastered form. The audio sounds fine on all the discs - a third CD contains in chronological form the non-album material from their singles - though only five songs are on there, with five seperate remixes of "Situation" : it certainly is not a record to listen to. In perhaps a baffling move, many of the bands rare material - the TV theme tune for "Get Set", and the post split remixes of "Only You", "Don't Go", "Nobody's Diary", and "Situation" are absent. Also missing is the 1982 London show broadcast by the BBC. By definition then, this is an incomplete but still weighty guide to the bands work during its short lifespan. The DVD contain a 40 minute documentary, 20 minutes of promos, eight TV appearances, and the two LP's in 5.1 form. It's not by any definition insubstantial, but this release would benefit from the extra missing material. If you want a quick hit of everything Yazoo that is essential, this is it.

I bought this because I'm one of those early 40's kind of guy who likes his pop synthesised and aged by a good twenty years or so.

While it's great to have digital remasters of all these classic tracks I'm surprised at the cost of this. Who are Mute trying to reach? Diehards like me will buy this anyway, but the curious will pass because of the cost.

Hopefully, Mute will realise this and bring the cost down. MAybe then new listeners can discover what some of us have known for years; Yazoo are pretty bloody good.

This is a fantastic complete collection of the fantastic 80's syntheseiser duo Yazoo (Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke). It contains both of their albums, Upstairs At Eric's (No. 2 in 1982) and You And Me Both (No. 1 in 1983) and a third CD of A-B Sides and 12" Remixes and a DVD of both the albums in 5.1 Mix, Promotional Videos, A Short Film and Yazoo At The BBC.

It contains the classic "Only You" which made No. 2 in the charts in April 1982 and my favourite track of theirs "The Other Side Of Love" which made No. 13 in November 1982. The 7" and 12" mixes are on CD3 of this collection as it did not appear on either albums.

If you are a fan of the 80's then this is a must buy for your collection, you won't be disappointed. This is a fantastic value for money box set.
