It is no exaggeration to say that 'In Your Eyes' is as much an album to define the very best in 80's soul as Jacko's 'Thriller'. It is certainly an album that anyone with a serious interest in the greatest soul albums of the era should have in their collection. Every track is a winner in it's own right and there is a lot of variety on the album which makes for a great listen throughout.
Opener 'Feel Like Making Love' might be a cover but it is a totally different take on Roberta Flack's original classic and sets the tone for what follows perfectly. 'Inside Love (So Personal)' is probably the funkiest thing on show and was co - produced by Kashif who was a hot producer at the time. The combination of Arif Mardin's classy sound and Kashif's more keyboard and bass approach works surprisingly well and, amazingly, the song reached only the lower reaches of the U.K chart when released as a single. Another single 'Lady Love Me (One More Time)' follows and it is the type of mid-tempo summer soul song to put you in good spirits for ages afterwards. Benson might be renowned as a great guitarist but he also has a great voice and songs such as this one are simply made for him. 'Love will Come Again' is more atmospheric and a little bit jazzy - its really one more for his older fans but is ice cool and a great chill-out tune.
Side two of the original vinyl album begins with the ultra slick Michael Masser song 'In Your Eyes'. It was a massive hit here in the U.K and has probably been on every love song compilation since. More MOR than soul, it may be sweet but it is short and so it just about saves itself from getting labelled as 'syrupy'. "Never Too Far To Fall' is another mid-tempo song. Not as strong as 'Lady Love Me', it is still a good track and lifts the tempo a jot from the title track. 'Being With You' and 'In Search Of A Dream' are two guitar picking instrumentals and are definitely aimed at Benson's Jazz fanbase. This said, both are great chill-out listens and they do break up the formula of the rest of the album nicely. Lastly, 'Use Me' is a really nice, romantic soul song about relationships and 'Late At Night' a 'Greatest Love Of All' sounding duet with Vickie Randle.
As smooth as soul gets, "In Your Eyes' is a total success and along with Jacko's 'Thriller' and Jeffrey Osbourne's 'Stay With Me Tonight' is an album that firmly defines all that was good about 80's soul music.
A Bona-Fide Classic.
