Product Description

Product Description

Writer Ian Stafford's quest to play alongside or against some of Britain's top sporting stars reveals not only the personalities of those he came up against, but also what it is about them that makes them the top in their field. Fulfilling his dreams, Stafford joined Everton on their pre-season training trip abroad before coming on as a sub in a testimonial game at Goodison Park, wrestled with Pat Roach, played for Yorkshire on their pre-season cricket tour of South Africa, played for Wigan Warriors in the traditional Boxing Day rugby league derby against St Helens, and for Leicester in rugby union (almost scoring a try in Ireland), he raced against Eddie Irvine and Johnny Herbert and sprinted against some of the world's top athletes in Birmingham.

About the Author

Ian Stafford was chief sports reporter on the Mail on Sunday and now conducts weekly interviews for the Independent. The winner of several awards for his journalism, he has written four previous books including Playground of the Gods, which was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year prize.

Just great 28 Nov 2001

I came to this book through Ian Stafford's Player features in Esquire magazine, and really, really enjoyed it. It's all very well to write about sport, but to have the balls to go out and play it is something else, and Stafford really takes you there. Excellent.

The boy done good! 20 Aug 2001

Even better than his first great book, with a great variety of sports personalities from wrestler Pat Roach to Eddie Irvine. Why has nobody put this on the telly? Stafford is brilliant.

How does this donkey get away with it? Clearly not happy with making an arse of himself in his first book, he does it again. It's almost as if he is on some crusade to prove to himself, and anyone who will listen, that he "could have made it". The insights insights into the country's top clubs are interesting, but frankly ruined by Stafford's ego constantly insisting that he'd "earned the respect" of the people who were having to put up with him. No doubt there will be another book where he does the same thing for clubs in America, or France, or anywhere that'll have him, or perhaps he gets to do the same with women's teams next (more his level I suspect). Either way, Stafford will continue to milk the concept for all it's worth as he rides the gravy train to a comfortable retirement whilst offering the reader less and less as time goes on. Don't buy this book!!
