I haven't got through the first series yet but I was hooked by episode two. These series were recommended to me by my former pyschotherapist when she learned we had a mutual addiction to another HBO series The Wire. I thought it was interesting/amusing that a person who worked as a therapist during the day would watch this series in her relaxation time. I've also trained and worked as a counsellor, so I was curious. I haven't been disappointed. Not only does In Treatment show the complexities of the patient/client issues but also - more interestingly, I think - the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship and the complexities of the therapist's experience. I haven't seen anything yet which is glaringly inauthentic or played up for the storyline. I think people who go for the likes of Batman or Armaggedon would probably want to give this a wide berth. But, if you're into complex psychological stories, this may be for you.

I agree totally on the description of the series as extremely attractive peaks into the psychotherapist's otherwise closed area. A psychologist I was curious about a series depicting what was going on between counselor and client. When watching the series, I was hooked. Strange enough picking a movie that close to what I was doing in my working hours. It is the true setting, the normal verbal exchange, effortless performed by talented actors like Gabriel Byrne, Dianne Wiest et al that make it. Funny, that HBO and Warner present a series originally developed outside the United States. It works down to details even that the original script is in Hebrew by the Israeli Hagai Levi. - I would recommend the HBO box-set even to prospective students of psychology.

I've only watched a few episodes from season one so far but I have to say so far this series is absolutely fantastic. If you enjoy exploring human relationships and particularly your own relationship with the world then this is definitely a must buy. This series looks at the darkest parts of ourselves with the possibility of redemption and change. This is a series based on dialogue and the exploration of feelings, unconscious thoughts and human frailty in all of its guises. The acting is superb by both patient and therapist and I can already foresee how each of the characters will develop over time. I actually look forward to returning home after work and watching a couple of episodes and the last time I experienced that sensation was watching Kung Fu starring David Carradine!
