The cover image sums up what this book is really all about. It's a review, a very sad one at that, of how heroic engineering endeavour can be overcome by political intervention (and lack of public use) and end up being returned to nature.

All the way through the book you'll see images of the route(s) of the Atlantic Coast Express before and after closure. The after images are particularly distressing if you like to remember the glory of the ACE at it's height.

The images are well chosen to reflect the agenda of the book, although in my view some are a little on the dark side. Because of the 'after closure' content, a good half of the images do not contain shots of locos or stock and as such it's a bit thin for spotters ;-)

Overall, the author obviously has his views on the closures / rundowns and these come across loud and clear - no sitting on the fence for Mr Grayer! A good reference though for those of a Southern bent.

In the Tracks of the ACE - The Destruction of the Southern Network West of Salisbury
I personaly travelled on the "ACE",otherwise known as the Atlantic Coast Express many times in my younger days.I would travel from Portsmouth to connect with the ACE at Salisbury and travel to Camelford for the bus connection to Boscastle. This book was hard to put down,so many memories flooding back,it also was saddening to see the destruction of this memorable railway line and all the stations. The front cover picture of Camelford was a clear sign of the books content.Very well done by the author.

If you knew the Atlantic Coast Express you will love this book; or maybe not! It is both interesting and sad in that it shows what was a great, cross country railway and a famous train of its time and then the demise of that whole story.
A great read.
