Book Description

19 Nov 2009

Addy and Prue Fairweather live with Nell, their widowed mother, in a flat above her shop on the Scotland Road. The sisters, however, are very different. Addy is dark-haired, plain and always in trouble whereas Prue is flaxen-haired, blue-eyed and as angelic as her looks imply. To make matters worse, Nell makes no secret of her preference for the younger girl, increasing Addy's jealousy and resentment.

On the other side of the coin, Giles Frobisher and his twin sister, Gillian, live in a crumbling mansion near the sea in Devon. The family have lost most of their money in the Depression, so Giles leaves university and joins the Fleet Air Arm. He meets the Fairweather girls briefly on a visit to Liverpool but they lose touch. When they meet again Addy and Prue are no longer children and Giles realises he is falling in love ...

I have never bought any of Katie Flynn's books before, but after reading these reviews I thought I couldn't go wrong. How wrong I was!

From the beginning, the way the two girls spoke was totally unconvincing. They were supposed to be aged 8 and 10, yet spoke as if they were in their mid teens, at least. This 'adult' way of speaking, with childish words slotted in every few pages as if to remind us that they were in fact children, got silly after a while.

Added to this, I got fed up with the Liverpool slang. Just because the books are set in or around Liverpool & by a Liverpudlian author doesn't mean that we have to be subjected so much to words that we don't understand if we don't come from that part of the country. 'Connie Onny' was one of those words, which apparently is slang for condensed milk.

One of my favourite authors is Maureen Lee, who is also a Liverpudlian whose books are set in Liverpool, but she manages to write 'un-putdownable' books, without having to use Scouse language and her young characters actually sound and act like children, unlike Katie Flynn's!

I have tried to persevere and have slowly struggled to page 90 without enjoying any of it (but had nothing else to read in bed) and will now give up. Very disappointing. No more Katie Flynn books for me, I'm afraid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Appalling
I read a lot of books and this is up there with the worst!

So boring - the story (what there is of it), plods along and is written in a wooden tone. Read more
