Review

‘A strange tale seething with disturbing psychological overtones ... Hitchcock would have loved the premise’

(US Kirkus Review )

'A frightening, gripping tale. This is one of the most fascinating and controlled first novels I've ever read - a sustained performance that hypnotizes and terrifies'

(Edmund White )

'Original, subversive, funny, twisted and totally encrossing . . . a mind-bending tour de force. I read the last page, flipped back to the beginning, and immediately started it again'

(Chelsea Cain )

'The relationship between Daniel and Luke is unique in the annals of literature. I haven't been this entertained by a debut novel in years'

(Dale Peck )

'Striking narration...Deleew’s precise, vivid prose has a visceral power of both a successful psychological thriller and a gripping ghost story'

(The Telegraph )

Review

"More than brothers, less than friends, linked for life: the relationship between Daniel and Luke is unique in the annals of literature, and will keep you guessing right until the book reaches its inevitable conclusion. I haven't been this entertained by a debut novel in years."

-- Dale Peck, author of "What We Lost" and "Body Surfing" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Creepy! 2 April 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a gripping story about a lonely boy called Luke and his invisible friend Daniel. They meet in the playground one day when Luke is just six.
The story is narrated by Daniel who slowly gains control over Luke's mind and stays with him for the next twelve years.
This is a very sinister and creepy book that leaves the reader guessing about Luke's state of mind. No real answers are given apart from Luke's family background of mental illness.
This is a good debut novel with a gripping storyline that kept me turning the pages.

I too read this book after reading a review in a newspaper or magazine. The phantom childhood friend, the dysfunctional family, a presumed mentally ill grandmother,a mentally ill mother and child both on medication from a Psychiatrist all lead one to believe that Schizophrenia is at the heart of this novel until THE END when something very strange happens.

An excellent, gripping, well written first novel.

I realised what this book was about before reading it, due to a review in a national newspaper, but nothing could prepare me for the totally creative and imaginative way that Brian Deleeuw has written this book. He must surely have some knowledge of XXXX (i cant mention without giving the story away) as some of the descriptions he writes about are so bizarre. I couldnt put this book down. It is so unusual from any other book ive read, and if youre looking for something a bit left of centre, try it.
