Biography

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the '70s progressive rock groups, Yes proved to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. As a long term fan of the group (going on 35 years now), I was sceptical about yet another live release from the group. However having listened to it several times, I can fully appreciate the wisdom of releasing this at this juncture in their career. It not only brings new life to some older classics, but also allows the group to be more flexible in their choices & play some of the "long lost" Drama era epics (Tempus Fugit & Machine Messiah) as well as Astral Traveller from the Banks era. These are all truly welcome and reflect the changes that appear to have occurred since Jon Anderson was sidelined. All the classics are still present & correct (And You And I, Starship Trooper & Yours is no Disgrace etc) and it is also a welcome to see appearances of South Side of the Sky as well as Onward. For those of you wary about the introduction of Benoit David to the line up should not worry in the slightest, as he brings out all the nuances of Anderson as well as introducing his own voice to the mix, which amounts to being a pleasant cross between both Anderson & Horn. The results are very good indeed. Long may it continue and I look forward to a live release from the Fly From Here tour. I have the bonus DVD with this package, which is a nice touch, though I would have liked to have seen at least a couple of extra full tracks included - though as a "bonus" disc it does its job well enough. 4 Stars overall as I feel that there was scope for at least a couple of extra tracks they could have played (such as Going For the One or Gates of Delirium - now that would have made this a 5 star plus if they had been included).

Still very much alive 11 Jan 2012
Format:Audio CD
Ok,this isn't the present lineup but the one with Oliver Wakeman on keyboards. This, however, is a welcome addition to the various live offerings Yes have produced over the years. Firstly, let's get one quibble aside, Siberian Khatru lacks the pace and aggression that has made it a really great opener in the past. It seems to me in recent years that Steve Howe has just eased off the throttle a bit on this one. But that aside it is still a good track. What really makes this stand out are the tracks from Drama that at last get an airing live (Tempus Fugit being an underrated Yes classic), Astral Traveller (proof that Yes were a band to reckon with before the Yes album) and a beautiful version of Onward, (a track that I was never particularly keen on in its studio form). All the other tracks are present and correct in their execution live and at last Steve Howe seems to have put his mark on Owner of a Lonely Heart. The DVD is the icing on the cake with a live preformace of Machine Messiah and if I could give it another half star for that I would.

Awesome album 6 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
Having been a keen follower of the group for the past 35 years I believe I am able to give a balanced review of the album. I actually like the new line-up. Benoit sounds better than I originally thought he would do. His vocals are excellent. This album really does the business for me. Ok, the line-up featured is the last but one. The production and sound is clear, with great depth and mastered very nicely. Nobody is left out in the mix. Plus the packaging is a real treat and I love the artwork by Roger Dean. As for the actual playing itself, Yes hasn't sounded this good since the mid 1980's. I cannot criticise anyone. I did read some of the one star reviews on amazon.com, with much surprise actually. However, I've come to the conclusion that these guys must either have been listening to a different album or had some preconceived opinions to air. This album is *not* a one star album! Stand out tracks for me are, Siberian Khatru, Astral Traveller & Machine Messiah. This is a great album and a worthy addition to your Yes collection.

What happened to this band and why did no one point out how languid this performance is? Surely in rehearsal SOMEONE must have thought "Hold on, this is really awful". Read more
