A Great & Influential Artist 26 Jan 2013
By Jeffrey H. Rose - Published on Amazon.com
Verified Purchase
A despondent Jimmy Donley, a barely literate singer/composer from Gulfport,MS took his own life 50 years ago. Jimmy wrote hundreds of songs but never registered any of them. Instead he gave them away, sold them for beer money or had them clipped by other artists. There is no telling how many of his songs are credited to others but his "influence" can be heard all through the vibrant New Orleans swamp and pop scene that swirled around Cosimo's recording studio on North Rampart. Traces of his sound can be gleaned from a wide spectrum of music covering a time line from Fats Domino to Creedence Clearwater.

For years now the only way to hear the artist, himself, was thru the old pirated CD's passed around in Hancock County, Mississippi, or in the remaining honky tonks in Lakeshore and Clermont Harbor. This CD is a compilation of Jimmy's "known" recordings. It's quality is good and if you listen, I mean really listen, you will appreciate just how far the music of this street musician has gone. You can read the accompanying bio and then forever wonder when you hear a certain sound if Jimmy wrote it or just set it up.

This is more than a great CD. It is an essential historic document and a tribute to a tremendously gifted and influential artist who although many have "heard" few have ever known. All together a real treasure!
