"The Living Mountain", Nan Shepherd's love letter to the Cairngorms, is recognised as a classic of mountain literature and her poetry explores similar themes. Rocks, burns, wildlife and plants are given being and presence.By allowing herself to be absorbed into the totality of the mountain Shepherd discovers her true essence. In addition to the hill poetry "In the Cairngorms" includes some intensely felt love poems and is illustrated by attractive line drawings.
I am so grateful to Gallileo publishing for republishing Shepherd's poetry which has been out of print for many years. Read it and see why!

This is a re-issue of a collection of Nan Shepherd's poems, it isn't by Robert Macfarlane and whilst I'm glad his fame has helped him to promote her work it should be remembered who the author actually is. It is a lovely collection and timely reminder that for Nan poetry and the mountains weren't about "Wild Swimming" or any such nonsense, they were about breath of life and contact with the earth.

Nan Shepherd's 'The Living Mountain' is the best prose account of our mountain landscape, ever. sadly, viewed dispassionately, she was not a great poet, but writes like an amateur dabbler, in thrall to Wordsworthian convention. every verse had me reaching for an editorial pen, to make obvious refinements (at least she had a go, more than I would..). so thanks to R Macfarlane for exhuming it, and it's a lovely artefact to possess, but only of 'period' interest. like her novels indeed.

It is a beautifully written anthology and sits very neatly alongside her book "The Grampian Quartet". Her knowledge of the Cairngorms makes the book interesting, and not just to readers who know the area. The three prose fiction pieces in "The Grampian Quartet" are a good read, and her poetry in "In the Mountains" arises from her love of the mountains. It's great to read a book like hers while listening to a band like Runrig !!
