Book Description

1 May 2014
Hill-walking was Shepherd's great love; her single collection of poetry In the Cairngorms (1934) expresses an intensity of deep kinship with nature. They are poems written with the perception of one who has climbed the mountains and truly knows them. The poetry has many religious notes - references to 'the Light' and 'the Presence' in the hills; though these references could seem Christian, they are perhaps expressions of a broader spirituality - Shepherd herself likened her journey to a Buddhist pilgrimage. This volume speaks to lovers of poetry and of nature.

"The Living Mountain", Nan Shepherd's love letter to the Cairngorms, is recognised as a classic of mountain literature and her poetry explores similar themes. Rocks, burns, wildlife and plants are given being and presence.By allowing herself to be absorbed into the totality of the mountain Shepherd discovers her true essence. In addition to the hill poetry "In the Cairngorms" includes some intensely felt love poems and is illustrated by attractive line drawings.
I am so grateful to Gallileo publishing for republishing Shepherd's poetry which has been out of print for many years. Read it and see why!

It is a beautifully written anthology and sits very neatly alongside her book "The Grampian Quartet". Her knowledge of the Cairngorms makes the book interesting, and not just to readers who know the area. The three prose fiction pieces in "The Grampian Quartet" are a good read, and her poetry in "In the Mountains" arises from her love of the mountains. It's great to read a book like hers while listening to a band like Runrig !!
