Product Description

Michael Maloney stars as an out-of-work actor who decides to put on a production of 'Hamlet' over the Christmas holidays: with a cast of only six and in a church under threat from developers. The actors selected include a drunk, an ex-child actor and a panto dame (who is to play Gertrude). All Maloney's character has to do is knock them into shape, in less than two weeks. Director Kenneth Branagh rounds up the usual suspects (including John Sessions and Richard Briers).

This is a little gem of a movie - but is it EVER going to be released on DVD? Don't really see what the hold up is...
I 've seen some dire DVD releases in my time, so surely a film as good as this should benefit from a DVD release?

My favourite film of all time and they have deleted it in this country - WHAT A TRAVESTY!! Those waiting for it to go to DVD will not have their wish fulfilled. We need to treasure home grown talent like Brannagh rather than trashing their original and brilliant creations not obliterate them off the face of the planet.
The film is truly reflective of the lovely and barmy actor types that I have worked with or come across in my experience of the 'biz and is a gentle and timely reminder of what actors and artists should be and want to strive for before the crashing blows of Big Brother and X-Factor came to dominate what being a performer is all about. This gorgeous little gem will bring delight and amusement to anyone looking for an original, witty, intelligent and endearing production without a sniff of CGI or box office big guns. Even Joan Collins' performance in this is one of note and all the other actors truly relish the three dimension and appealing characters that they had the good fortune to be cast in. Bring on the DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We watched this on release and have had the VHS all these years. It is such a shame that it has not been released on DVD and I can't understand why....! This is our "family's film" the one film which we all love and would watch over and over and are now truly missing! Why not on DVD yet? When might it be?

I LOVE this film - it is a heart warming tale of heartbreak, new love and reconciliation all discovered by a small bunch of misfit actors as they strive to play Hamlet at Christmas to save a church nobody loves! It is pure genius from Kenneth Brannagh and his outstanding cast, for it takes genius to link their tribulations with those of the Bard's troubled Dane so completely. Aspects of the play resonate with each actor and each emerges the stronger from their struggle to give a great performance - even as Hollywood tries to destroy all their efforts. Not a dry eye in the house! Wonderful!

I saw this film in a small cinema in London with my son. My sides ached at the antics of the cast and, when the film ended, the entire audience applauded; I have never seen that before or seen it since. What does one have to do to get this gem out into DVD land?

I really enjoyed this film, but if you only watch it for one reason, that reason should be Celia Imrie!!! She's absolutely brilliant in this, the cast are all good but Celia Imrie simply stands out with her hilarious portrayal of the barmy designer Fadge. A good film with enjoyable performances all-round.

17.02.11 - ORDER MIDWINTER'S TALE - You need a multi zone DVD Player, however. But it's out there!! Hoorah!

THIS IS A BRILLIANT FILM. That is my review. It has a point and it has heart. But above all it's a good, no great life-affirming movie!
Someone will tell me why and how is that such dire films (you know the ones I'm talking about) are released and this rightfully considered little gem of British cinema is deleted? DELETED! Why Oh Why Oh Why? Amazon.co.uk - surely you have the influence and can help all those who ache with anticipation that it is released on DVD. On behalf of all those that love and cherish this film and those who have yet to fall under its spell, please find out why it is left to us only on VHS; we will lose it as each VHS machine becomes unrepairable. The rest is silence!

I agree with the other reviewers: this is a little gem; a neglected masterpiece. Like several of them, I too wonder where on earth the DVD is? This charming film deserves a DVD release and it seems a shame, when so much dross is available, that this is still only on second hand VHS. Does anyone know why this should be?
