Product Description

CD Description

Skyclad, the seminal British band, often referred to as the originators of Folk Metal, have signed a deal with Scarlet Records. Formed in 1990 by Martin Walkyer (Sabbat) and Steve Ramsey (Satan/Pariah), the band gained extraordinary attention from both the press and the public with the now legendary debut album The Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth (1991) and, since then, has built up a solid reputation which led them to take part in some of the most important international metal events (such as the renowned Dynamo, Wacken, Gods of Metal and Tuska Festivals) and share the stage with some of the most respected artists of their time. In The All Together is the confirmed title for the bands new, long-waited album, the thirtieth in their prestigious career, expected to be released in spring 2009. Recorded and mixed by Dario Mollo (The Cage, Voodoo Hill) at Damage Inc Studio, in Ventimiglia, Italy, during August 2008, In The All Together mixes the usual thrash/speed metal influences with the extraordinary folk melodies that made the band famous all around the world, maintaining a fresh and dynamic approach which gives a strong live dimension to the new songs.

If you haven't heard Skyclad before, but have tastes leaning towards the quality end of the metal spectrum, this may not be the best place to start but who cares? If you listen to this you'll end up buying the rest anyway... If you don't know, what you get with pretty well any Skyclad album is a complex layered sound, crunching riffs and that wicked violin soaring above it all. What's more, unlike many bands who try to carry this kind of thing off, their lyrics are blissfully free of satanic or fantasy drivel, which is quite important as you can actually understand the words. It's clever, modern, political, angry stuff that stands up well even written down on the lyric sheet: "Another dawn, another date; Another meeting of the ol' G8..."
I thought their previous release, A Semblance of Normality, suffered from slightly weak vocals (excusable given that their singer and lyricist had just left the band). For any existing fans who haven't rushed out and got a copy already, this is really good: not their best, but back on form. While the overall sound is similar to the last effort the vocals are harsher and fit the music better. It could almost be Walkyier spitting out his lines in places. The lyrics are almost up to that standard too.

Four stars for Skyclad, six for anyone else.

It's been a while since Semblance of Normality, but it was worth the wait, time has not mellowed them at all,in fact I would say it has more 'agression' than previous albums, that's not to say they've gone Death Metal or anything but it's an intense offering,no ballads here!
It actually reminds me in places of their debut, some of it has the ferocity of early days,it's not a long album, some 40 odd minutes but there is no filler at all, much as I love Sabbat and early Skyclad,it's hard to imagine these songs with Martin Walkyier on them as Kevin Ridley now fits perfectly.
