I've read it with the great interest. Especially parts about tango lyrics - that I had a very little knowledge about (because of my Spanish illiteracy), meetings and discussions with old milogueros, and a very impressive part about Alberto Podesta. I didn't know that he was so young - his voice is the voice of a mature man even on the very first tracks with Calo and Di Sarli.

The Authentic Tango 24 Sep 2011
By Dottie Pope, MSW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I don't tango but I have wanted to start taking lessons after reading "In Stranger' Arms: The magic of the tango." The author took me to the heart of the authentic Argentinean tango dance, the beauty of its music and its poetry. I am grateful to her for dispelling all the false images I had of the sexually sado-masochistic tango presented by the media.

The history of the dance from its beginning through its evolution is intriguing. One feels as though one is there as she guides the reader through the streets and dance halls of Buenos Aires.

Through her stories, and those of dancers from around the world, she reveals the power and pull of this dance. I found it fascinating that there is a tango code of ethical behavior that makes the dancer feel safe, safe in a stranger's arms. It was a revelation to me that because one is safe, it can become a dance of self-discovery, a mirror for the soul, and give one a sense of universal connection.

Through her personal revelations, and those of other dancers one discovers why they are impacted, changed, by this dance, and become impassioned for the experiences.

I envy the tango gypsies of the world, and salute them!

History, Love and Meaning: Tango Expressed 15 Sep 2011
By David - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Ever been to a Tango lesson and wandered around the room studying the faces of the dancers as they warm up to each other's arms?

I have and always wondered what was going on with these folks - were they dating, lovers, married recently or for a long time? Certainly not total strangers - not with that embrace.

Frankly, I couldn't figure it out until I got a hold of Beatriz Dujovne's book - In Strangers' Arms: The Magic of Tango. As much history, personal reflection and academic study, the books moves effortlessly through the labyrinth that this dance is for most of us who seek the solace and comfort of its temples.

It debunks so much of the myths surrounding this dance and builds upon your emotional experience's substance that you come away from it like have sat with a delicious 8 course meal and fascinating conversational companion.

From its ethic roots to its popular performers, In Strangers' Arms educates and edifies like no tango book I've seen - and I've seen quite a few.

Thank you Dr. Dujovne for opening up your tango and the world's tango to those of us who have wondered and wandered for so long.

Insight and helpful for how to dance in BA 17 April 2012
By Laura C - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am so happy I did not wait to buy this book later. I really appreciate the descriptions of the milongas in BA in particular and I also loved seeing more photos of regular people dancing with joy and passion. I thought the title of the book was really apropos, "In Stranger's Arms" , because in the best tango, we are demonstrating complete trust and intimacy with stranger, particularly when a tanguera visits another country for a short time, like I did. With a stranger, since there are no strings attached, you can be completely yourself and act as intimately as you desire without consequences! So it feels safe in a whole other way. How lovely that Beatriz was able to get people's internal experience of the tango. I really enjoyed the stories from the tango "gypsies" who travel the world for the perfect embrace and tango experience and recognize each other at festivals!
> I also found Dujovne's analysis of the songs very interesting and how the image of women has changed from La Morocha to Milonguita to La Chorra to Malena--from ideal sweet homemaker, lover to dancer prostitute, to thief of hearts to the strong woman who is deep in experience and tears. I think that it is significant that women used to be scarce in BA at first, and now men are the scarce ones.
