A brilliant and insightful book, both from an external and internal perspective this book both praises India for it's great achievements and history while throwing scorn on its shortcomings. This great perplexing country is often a mystery to foreigners yet Luce clearly explains how it functions in spite of the gods! If you want to understand how India got to where it is and where it is going, start here..

Quite simply, the best book on India that I have read. A tour de force - the book explores, somewhat uniquely, the different facets of Indian culture, history, and politics that are all relevant to its economic outlook today. Deeply insightful. Left me wondering why it was not better publicised. Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand India today.

By Mr. Anuj Ghai on 4 April 2014
Format: Paperback
Lucid, well-argued and highly perceptive, this is an insightful book on contemporary India that succeeds admirably in highlighting the complexities and contradictions that lie at the heart of modern India's story. The book does a good job of chronicling India's history post-Independence and in tracking the variations in its socio-political and economic trajectory over the years. The chapters are thematically arranged and together present a relatively comprehensive snapshot of India's strengths and weaknesses. In his critique of India's major national and regional political parties, the author remains balanced but otherwise clearly sympathetic to the Nehruvian secular-liberal ideals that ostensibly inform Congress ideology and policy.
