Objects such as doorways, gravestones, musical instruments, and even shards of pottery fill in the cracks between large historical events and depict the intricacies of daily life. In his completely revised and expanded edition of In Small Things Forgotten, Deetz has added new sections that more fully acknowledge the presence of women and African Americans in Colonial America. New interpretations of archaeological finds detail how minorities influenced and were affected by the development of the Anglo-American tradition in the years following the settlers' arrival in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. History is pretty much junk, one might conclude after finishing this breezy introduction to historical archaeology. Poring over estate listings, pottery shards, gravestones and excavated foundations, James Deetz reconstructs the changing face of American life during the colonial era, as immigrant traditions and aesthetics adapted to the New World. The book makes a powerful argument for an empirical kind of history far removed from the anonymous assertions of high school textbooks.

I bought this book as it was one of the key texts in a module in Archaeology at University - 'Roman Material Culture Studies' - it provides an interesting and detailed yet accessible narrative on the intricacies of material culture from Early America. It discusses afro-carribean/afro-american/anglo-american case studies and how influences from all of these places changed the shape of Early American culture. Particularly interesting was the chapter about the merging and changing uses of ceramics and the consumption of food. This all provided an interesting parallel and areas of thought when considering material culture from other periods such as the Romans in Britain.

this book told me about parts of the material culture of the past that were unknown to me. The Archaeology of the houses and gravestones tell you of the changes in the attitudes of the people of america over time. the book was well writern and easy to understand. There was not too much technical detail so it really made you want to read the rest.
