Biography

Albert King is truly a "King of the Blues," although he doesn't hold that title (B.B. does). Along with B.B. and Freddie King, Albert King is one of the major influences on blues and rock guitar players. Without him, modern guitar music would not sound as it does -- his style has influenced both black and white blues players from Otis Rush and Robert Cray to Eric Clapton and ... The Bad...
This DVD and the CD have been victims of bad editing as songs are clearly missing. The previous release of In Session had Ask Me No Questions on it and Overall Junction (both missing from this version) but it lacked I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town, which this version has. Begs the question why?, DVD space?, copyright infringements?
The DVD song order has clearly been hacked around. Around 57mins in Albert tells Stevie about him being a good guitarist and having soul right before the lead into Pride and Joy and yet he also says the same thing at 39.30 mins which then ends with an abrupt Act 2 cut scene.....again why?

The Good...
Throughout you can tell Stevie is in awe of his idol Albert. The banter is great with the odd awkward moments from Stevie either not hearing what Albert said or laughing falsely. No way a bad thing, great to watch between the two of them so Im glad they didn't cut out the banter (shame this did the songs though).
As for the playing, simply genius from all there, including the other band members who are hidden in shadow (Gus Thornton is one cool bass player). Stevie doesn't fail to show his passion for playing in his face with every song and Albert sure makes "Lucy" sing even though it looks like his fingers are far to big for the fretboard (I believe he strung his guitar upside down aswell, top E string being at the top rather than bottom).

In summary definately worth buying for what's on it, just an utter shame it's been badly produced and missing some great songs meaning you have to buy all both releases to get them.

2 great guitar legends gone, but not forgotten.

As there are a few versions of this around, please note that I'm reviewing the CD/DVD combo edition.
Why this has been sat in the vaults for so long is beyond me as both SRV and King really crank it up in this session filmed for Canadian TV in 1983 backed with King's band, the CD runs to nearly an hour and the DVD to nearly an hour and a half, there is some crossover with tracks but both discs have exclusive takes.
Aside from the guitar playing, it's the banter that will charm you with King making witty comments and at one point telling SRV after a pretty storming solo that if he sticks with it, he might be pretty good someday, adding a wry smile and a wink.
If you do play the guitar, you won't be able to help but get it out and attempt to join in although once you've done, you might feel like putting it on e-bay in frustration.
