For anyone tired of travelogues, this book will be a breath of fresh air as it has a vitality often so lacking in other travel books. I loved the way that Cynny breezed from one situation to another with a refreshing ability to see wonder in all before her. Having visited myself many of the places she describes, it was wonderful to see them brought to life; having a lady of more senior years tread the familiar footsteps of the young, gap-year traveller was a treat indeed. The book goes from the everyday difficulties of communication, hygiene and transport, through to the pleasure of an unspoilt landscape. If this does not inspire you to give up your hum-drum job, I'm not sure what will.

The author has written a wonderfully lively and thoughtful account of a silver-surfer's gap year - not just the planning and practical aspects, but also the feelings and ideas she took with her. Her vivid descriptions of the places and people she met in, for example, Nepal, Thailand and Australia, and how these helped her to reflect upon her own life, are all compulsive reading and made me want to take the same journey.
