This is a unique and pioneering book that offers the reader a moving insight into the experiences of transnational and transracial adoptees. An essential read for policy makers, researchers, social workers, adopters and adoptees whose prior knowledge base had been founded on third-party research and knowledge. Transcribed from the contributors own `words' the accounts have not been politicised, edited or appropriated in order to enter into the wider debate concerning transracial and transnational adoption.

For the first time, the voices of those who have been hitherto, marginalized and suppressed have been empowered with an opportunity to simply express, through their own mediums of writing, drawing and sculpture, etc., how they have and continue to experience and live with the impact of adoption.

Interwoven with the life-long search for a sense of belonging are accounts of negotiating the immeasurable loss of birth families, heritage, culture and genetic identity whilst transcending feelings of isolation, loneliness, displacement and internalized racism.

Whilst many of the narratives are very emotive and poignant, accounts of resilience and courage are humbling. The contributions are informative, thought provoking, challenging, inspirational and extremely touching. This book will prove to be cathartic for many transracial and transnational adoptees as well as assisting professionals and all those involved in adoption in supporting good practice.

This is a groundbreaking book, which all health and social care workers must read. Equally it is highly accessible to a very wide audience, including transracial adoptees, adoptive families and anyone who is interested in minoirty social groups and how they seek to survive within a hostile and prejudicial society, which too often has simply explored the debate of transracial adoption from diametrically opposed camps.

What this book does, is to provide a deeply moving and sensitive insight into the lives of transracial and transnational adoptees, who have experienced pain, loss, grief, rejection and a lifelong persuit of seeking to claim an idenity, despite the complex and interwoven barriers of culture, language and religion. Never before have the silenced voices of this minority group, which up until now have pushed to the borderlands of social and cultural contexts, have been heard in such a way, which reveals the complexities, contradictions and processes of developing on-going identities, within a society that has both ignored the needs of this group, and has largely chosen to white-wash the torment, grief and challenges each and every individual transracial and transnational adoptee faces.

This is a truly outstanding book, which MUST be read by anyone connected with health and social care, and anyone with a belief in social justice and a belief in the need to care for humanity.

This is a great book. All the contributions are personal accounts, thoughts and feelings which people need to be aware of. Adoptees will recognise and relate to some if not all aspects of this book and will be comforted to know that their voice is being heard and that they are not the only one's who feel this way. Social workers and potential adopters will benefit from hearing 'the other side' of the story, and hopefully will encourage thoughtful placements. I am not connected to the world of social work or adoption yet still found it a great read and very educational and moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Congratulations to Perlita Harris 8 Jun 2006

This is a remarkable book which I wish could be made compulsory reading for all those concerned with transracial adoption, particularly potential adopters.I wonder if the so called "celebrity"adopters have any idea of the long term implications of transracial adoption. Perhaps the ones currently in the media should be sent a copy.

Until this book was published, those involved in transracial adoption placements were not perhaps fully aware of the issues, but now there is no excuse. Social workers have been criticised in the past for refusing to place black children with white adoptive parents. Based on an emotional response, but clearly without the evidence to support it, the argument was that if a child needed a loving home, the colour or ethnic background of the parents was not important. This was in effect saying that the identity of the child did not matter.I believe many uninformed people may still share this view.Let them listen to the voices of the ones who matter, the only ones who know the long term consequences of such placements. Some of the contributors'stories are unbearably sad and deeply moving, others have had happier and more positive experiences, but every contribution is valuable in the process of understanding this complex issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars stories from the heart 4 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
Being a transracial adoptee, this book for me has been amazing. For the first time in my life I have read the stories of other transracial adoptees and met some of them that contributed to the book which has been very empowering. I can certainly relate to many of the stories, and this has helped me on my personal journey. To share my story and write about my saddness, and joy when growing up.

I feel that this book is groundbreaking and would highly recommend it to adoptees, birth mothers, birth fathers, social services and to whoever is interested working with children within the adoption/fostering field.

Transracial adoption is a complex subject, and it is about time that our voices are heard.
