Biography

Sometimes creativity can only properly thrive in exile, at a necessary distance from the familiar. So it has proved for Tina Dico, a 31 year old singer songwriter who left the safe and sociable world of her native Denmark 8 years ago, and upped sticks for a city where she knew nobody and nobody knew her: London.

Here, based in a flat in Ladbroke Grove, Dico lived alone. She walked a lot and, in the… Read more in Amazon's Tina Dico Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

After two successful EP's and a jaunt in 2004 singing with Zero 7 (she was the voice behind "Home") Danish singer/songwriter Tina Dico now releases her own debut album. Titled In The Red, the project has been produced by Chris Potter (The Verve, Blur, Richard Ashcroft) who provides a well-polished sheen, ensuring the album is accessible and immediate. Dico’s songs are already easy to like though. She breathes her strong vocals over tracks that tend towards the folk-pop realm, first single from the album, "Warm Sand’ (culled from her 2004 Far EP) being a good example of her approach. Most of the tracks here are radio-friendly love songs that glow with Potter’s lush orchestral instrumentation, combined with the occasional melancholic reverie. Songs such as "Room With A View" offer languorous acoustic moods, while opening gambit "Losing" combines downbeat verses with a catchy chorus. It might not have the same ‘chill-out’ credentials as Zero 7, but In The Red is a luxuriant listen all the same.--Paul Sullivan

About the Artist

On January 30th 06, Tina Dico will be releasing her debut album in the UK. She has already beaten Coldplay and U2 to the Number One slot in her native Denmark when it was released there earlier this year. Previously known in the UK for her vocals on two tracks on Zero 7’s acclaimed second album When It Falls â€" ‘Home’ and ‘The Space Between’ â€" both hailed as modern reboots of Joni Mitchell’s sunshine folk, she spent time touring with the electronic duo, playing the enormo-domes of the UK and the US before recording “In The Red”. Tina will release this on her own label.

That she has won the Best Songwriter Grammy and been voted Best Composer at the Danish Music Critics Awards is no mean feat, but the fact she did all this by putting out her music herself â€" without recourse to the marketing muscles of A Big Record Company â€" makes her unique. In an age of gimmicks and payola, text-in talent contests and image-first/music-second rock posturing, Tina Dico did it the other way: on the strength of her songs. “I guess it is quite unusual to start your own label when you’re 23 and release your own album in the States”, she says. “It goes to show you what you can achieve.”

I first heard Tina on Zero 7's 2nd album and fell in love with her voice. I saw her play at the 12 Bar Club in London and she blew me away. Since then, I've bought "Far", which is superb and recently bought "In the Red", which is more accomplished than her first. Initially the album didn't grab me, although Tina's voice stood out as being exceptional. After REALLY listening to "In the Red" a couple of times, the record has completely drawn me in. Tina's voice is quite unlike anyone else's: feminine, powerful and earthy, as many before, yet she has no peer. This record is captivating once you understand its vocabulary. The songs are beautiful, honest and heartfelt, full of hope, heartbreak and love. I can't stop listening to it. I hope Tina's next record is as good, perhaps with more presence from the band behind her fantastic voice. In the meantime, buy this record because you won't be disappointed, and if you get chance, see Tina in concert while it's relatively easy to do so.

Tina Dico is best known as a vocalist with Zero 7. Now she shows what a great talent she is by writing a superb album which literally grows on you with every listen.Every track is excellent although my favourite is 'One'.A follow up album is promised for next year and when you buy Red you will definitely want the next one.A DVD of Tina in concert is also available if you search for it and is also worth buying. Great music!

Aah, Tina Dico. Where have you been all my life?

I'd had this artist suggested to me by the Music Genome Project based on other styles of music I liked. I played a gamble and bought this CD, and I have been totally taken a-back by how impressive it is.

This is a calm and relaxing CD, one which I could listen to over and over again. I find it really quite strange that I'd never heard any of these songs before, going by how nice they all are. How can such talent be kept hidden for so long?

In my opinion, if you like artists such as Annie Lennox, Tunde, Norah Jones and Katie Melua as bigger-named examples, you will fall straight in love with Tina's pure and wholesome sound.

Favourite tracks on the CD are "The City", "Give In", "My Mirror" and "One".

Her youtube videos sound better.
My expectations may have been a little too high for this album after watching her youtube videos. I do recommend her music! She is wonderful. Her live stuff I think is better.
