I remember listening to this when it was first broadcast, and loving it. The idea of a darkly comic murder mystery with lashings of political jokes is a great one, and while this is not perfectly executed, it is very good indeed. I recently had the pleasure of listening to In The Red again on cassette, and I still enjoyed it very much, though not quite as much as I had the first time. I think part of the problem is that the sequel (don't remember when it was broadcast but it was in the first flush of Labour's victory) is sharper and better focused. It may be unfair to criticise a play for being not quite as good as its sequel, but having heard the second, I prefer it to the first and I can't help comparing the two. It must also be admitted that this has dated, many of the jokes referring to events 5 now years past. But still, this is a very clever play and great fun.
