Product Description

Product Description

Evoked in the voices of several women, four in particular, the tale of Flora Milk is one of dark Victorian hypocrisy and exploitation, and of questioning contemporary passion. The author won the 1992 W.H. Smith Literary Award. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format:Paperback
In the Red Kitchen follows the stories of three very different women: a contemporary newlywed, an Ancient Egyptian goddess-queen, and a nineteenth-century medium. The three voices are cleverly distinct, and as this compact novel progresses, the links between the three time-zones become clearer. Not a tricksy, showy book, but a literary novel which explores notions of feminine identity in a triptych of wholly different contexts, and leads to a marvellously unsettling conclusion.

Short but not quick 14 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback
I would normally expect to read a book of 160 pages in a couple of hours, but this took me a week or so. It's a very rich and involved story, with a lot of subtext that leaves the reader to decide what the truth and connections in the lives of these disparate women are. The prose style is lush, vivid and wonderfully descriptive, but like a very rich dessert I found it became overwhelming in anything but small bites. One to take slowly and savour rather than breeze through, definitely. It is clever, engaging and well-crafted, but in the final analysis it was a book I would say I admired more than I enjoyed.
