Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
They are also the cause of much suffering and distress, particularly in the tiny Republic of Mgombi. Landlocked between some much larger nations, diamonds are the only resource that this country has, so when a civil war breaks out and the British Army sends some soldiers as part of a UN Peace Keeping mission, no one expects the British Government to change allegiance with no warning.
Captain Rob Carlisle is ordered to abandon those he was sent to protect, knowing that the rebels will massacre the civilians and take control of the diamond mines. He deliberately disobeys the orders and escorts the civilians to safety. Among the party is the fleeing president, his family and millions of dollars worth of diamonds.
Although he returns to the UK to face a court martial, from which he is forced to resign his commission, Robert later discovers that his friend to whom he entrusted the diamonds was murdered and the rebel leader is now on the brink of buying arms from the Far East.
Sent on a mission to recover the diamonds, he is caught and sentenced to death by a Vietnamese court. We see him in a Vietnamese gaol, suffering beatings and torture to give up the diamonds’ location. Broken but not beaten, eventually he shuffles out to face the firing squad.
He did, however, manage to hide the diamonds before being captured, with a view to recovering them later.
Not easy to do when you are dead.

Shortly afterwards, a stunningly attractive young woman steps forward to continue the mission. Her name is Julianna Blanchard and she appears to be a Canadian journalist.
Only three people know the truth, but one is an eminent Thai surgeon who has created a masterpiece; another is the personal friend of the deposed African President and now the president of a very powerful news and information agency. Both have a vested interest in seeing her succeed. The last is the girl herself, who struggles against her personal demons while determined to succeed in completing her original mission.
