Book Description

Genre: LGBT Contemporary
Series: Seattle Marauders; Related Title: Two-Man Advantage

For four years, writer Landon Quinn has struggled to forget the one night he spent with Seattle Marauders defenseman Gregory Samson. Then Landon’s life takes an unexpected turn, and he finds himself back in Seattle and face-to-face with the man who broke his heart.

Samson doesn’t know what he did to run Landon off all those years ago, but he’s sure Landon’s leaving was for the best. The bright, beautiful young man Landon had once been was far too adoring, far too open, for the closeted hockey player’s peace of mind. The intervening years have only made Landon an even sexier temptation -- and Landon’s return presents Samson with a whole new set of problems.

Attraction sizzles between them, but having been burned once by Samson has left Landon twice shy. Even as Samson convinces Landon to let him out of the penalty box and into his life, Samson has to face the fact that his closely guarded secrets may come to light. Caught between the ghosts of his past and the promise of a future with Landon, the hockey star must decide if now that he's come off the bench, he's ready to come out of the closet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sizzling story with genuine characters! 12 Jun. 2012
By Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
In The Penalty Box is a powerful, passionate, sexy read.

Landon has been in love with Gregory for years. One night 4 years ago, he thought his dreams were finally going to come true. That wasn't even close to what happened and he has tried to push that mess of a situation out of his mind. After Landon returns to town he is forced to deal with all that he has tried to bury in the past.

Gregory and Landon have a relationship that is explosive. Over time they are able to admit their feelings for each other, but that is as far as Gregory will allow things to go. This story does not shy away from the realism that a professional athlete would be subjected to in being openly gay. We get to experience this road with them as they explore the entire aspect of pros and cons together.

Gregory has a very real and very disturbing reason that stems from childhood as to why he refuses to come out. This story opens our eyes to the issues that people face today.

The story line is unique and original. It delivers a very clear message that life if rarely simple or fair. These two have to learn to brave the trials together and get through the past and make sacrifices for the future.

If you're looking for a fast sizzling story with genuine characters and a very believable plot line, this book is for you.
The only thing that I struggled with just a bit was keeping track of the names at the first. Gregory/Samson was a bit confusing to try to keep up with until you get further into the book. He is referred by both his first and last name often. I know this is common with sports themed books, it just got confusing at times. This didn't take away from the amazing story at all, just a small issue for me.

Note: This is the second book in the series. You could read this as a stand-alone and be just fine. I have not read book one, but after reading this one I am going to grab it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seattle Marauders Series 23 April 2012

In the Penalty Box (Seattle Marauders)
For years, Gregory Samson has been able to stay in the closet. His sexual affairs have been with men who are also in the closet and not looking for an open relationship. Gregory's safe haven begins to crumble when Landon Quinn returns to Seattle after four years and does everything possible to avoid contact with Gregory. The more Landon ignores Gregory, the more Gregory desires a chance to correct his past with Landon.

In the Penalty Box is the second book in the Seattle Marauders series. The realistic plot features the negatives of being a hockey star in the spotlight, as well as the impact traumatic events can have on your behavior. Nightmares of childhood abuse still haunt Gregory and are the source of his fears. Living a lie for so many years, Gregory has lost the honorable man he truly is inside. Fear has suppressed all of Gregory's true emotions. The empathy shown by Landon allowed Gregory to slowly step out of the closet. Landon is openly gay, he is also very aware of the struggles gay men face dealing with a homophobic society.

Riley Shane's In the Penalty Box is an impressive and enjoyable romance exhibiting the many emotional phases couples must sometimes travel to find happiness with themselves, as well as with each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy hockey players! 11 April 2012

In the Penalty Box is the second installment in the Seattle Marauders series. Landon Quinn had been friends with hockey player Gregory Samson for a while until the night they spent together when Gregory called out another man's name while they were making love. Landon leaves town, only to return four years later and runs into Gregory again. The spark is still there, but Gregory is still in the closet and he doesn't remember why Landon seemingly hates him. Cue the entrance of another hockey player who is willing to be out with Landon and Gregory is jealous as hell, but is he willing to do something about it?

Jocks in the closet. They are a real treat for this reader and Riley Shane's latest book is a dream for this sports and m/m romance fan. As a reader you cannot help but feel sympathy for Landon. He's been in love (and lust) with Gregory for so many years, and the one time he gets Gregory in bed, it turns out the guy is hung up on one of his teammates. However, don't fear as when Landon comes back into town, he's got a backbone this time and when Gregory makes another pass at him...this time the encounter will be on his terms - or so he thinks! I enjoyed all the mental angst and turmoil that both Landon and Gregory went through to be together. Gregory's coming out to the world (and himself) was not clichéd, but thoughtful.

So far, both books in this series have been an immensely enjoyable read, filled with hot love scenes, interesting characterizations and enough hunky hockey players to make this reviewer very happy. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot Read 10 April 2012

All's fair in love and war but when the person you're in love with constantly keeps letting you down, what do you do? Well, for Landon Quinn it was to run away. I couldn't blame this character for tucking tail and running off to lick his wounds. Landon was an easy character to like. He's sweet and caring. The love for his family and friends is clear within the pages. So it's no shock that his heart is still open to the one man who broke it four years prior. I really liked how Landon kept his composure around Samson. It was a good game of cat and mouse. He wasn't intentionally trying to make Samson jealous but it worked and made for some entertaining reading.

At first I really didn't like Samson. The man did an unforgivable thing to Landon that broke his young heart. But as I continued to read I learned the whys of it. Samson has an unpleasant backstory that brought a tear to my eye. The fear of the unknown can rule a person's life and it has taken control of Samson's. The author did an excellent job of getting Samson's pain across; a very touching story.

In the Penalty Box revolves around a hockey team and that right there had me hooked before I even cracked open my laptop to start reading. But it was the touching storyline and in-depth characters that had me falling in love with the book. This is a book that definitely puts your emotions on a roller-coaster ride from beginning to end.

If you're a reader who likes a good dose of drama in your happy ever afters then this is a must read for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong, Deep Characters Drive this Fantastic Romance 10 April 2012

After having read, and loved, the first book in this series (Two Man Advantage) I was eagerly anticipating reading more. In the Penalty Box definitely doesn't disappoint.

Landon became one of my all-time favorite characters from the very beginning. He hooked me in with his open, giving personality. I loved how he was willing to take a chance, even if it meant he might get hurt worse than he ever had before. His understanding and willingness to work with Samson on his own issues just strengthened the love I had for Landon.

Samson took me a little longer to warm up to. Mostly because I was pissed at him for what he did to Landon in the prologue. And what a gut-wrenching scene that was. Samson doesn't say a single word until the very end of it. And then it's the one thing that would hurt above all others. But Samson definitely grew on me and it didn't take me long to love him too. His reasons for staying in the closet were not only understandable, but heartbreaking. It added layers to him that I wasn't expecting at first. Plus the way that he absolutely adored Landon endeared him to me. When he decides that he can't live without Landon, I'm hooked into their HEA and have no doubts they'll make it. And the scene where Samson `comes out' to his best friend - one of my absolute favorites, it was so well written.

There are some dark moments for the characters and, I admit, I wondered how this was going to end happily, but Riley Shane not only pulled it off, she had me grinning with joy by the end. I also really liked how Landon's family and the rest of the team were important parts of the story. They added so much, and rounded out the relationships. Neither man was an island and that made their coming together that much more believable.

Riley Shane is one of those few writers that can create characters that not only can I root for, but that feel real - who make mistakes and great accomplishments. Her writing has a depth that pulls you into the story and makes you lose time while devouring it. I've enjoyed each book I've read by her, and am definitely eagerly anticipating more. Highly recommended!!
