Product Description

Product Description

In Our Time brings together 40 of the most memorable, eloquent and influential speeches since 1945. From stark warnings against the threat of totalitarianism to celebrations of independence long fought for, and from rallying-calls for political change to passionate defences of moral principle, Hywel Williams's choice of speeches is richly eclectic in scope. This is an anthology with many voices: dictators and democrats, liberals and conservatives, nationalists and internationalists, soldiers and peace-makers, popes and presidents. The oratorical skills of some of the greatest political figures of the late 20th and early 21st centuries are on eloquent display here: Churchill and de Gaulle, Kennedy and King, Nehru and Nasser, Mandela and Mao, Thatcher and Blair, Clinton and Obama. Each speech is accompanied by a biography of the speaker, a concise introduction setting it in historical context, and a brief account of its impact and consequences. Both inspiring and thought-provoking, Great Speeches of our Time offers a unique and fascinating perspective on world history since 1945.

From the Inside Flap

In Our Time brings together 40 of the most memorable, eloquent and influential speeches since 1945. From stark warnings against the threat of totalitarianism to celebrations of independence long fought for, and from rallying calls for political change to passionate defences of moral principle, Hywel Williams's choice of speeches is richly eclectic in scope. This is an anthology with many voices: dictators and democrats, liberals and conservatives, nationalists and internationalists, soldiers and peace-makers, statesmen and entrepreneurs. The oratorical skills of some of the greatest political figures of the late 20th and early 21st centuries are on eloquent display here: Churchill and de Gaulle, Kennedy and King, Nehru and Nasser, Mandela and Mao, Thatcher and Blair, Castro and Obama. Each speech is accompanied by a biography of the speaker, a concise introduction setting it in historical context, and a brief account of its impact and consequences. Every major speech of the post-war era can be found within these pages, including some of the most important and memorable orations ever given: from Winston Churchill's celebrated “Iron Curtain” speech in Fulton, Missouri, in 1946, to David Ben-Gurion's historic address to the Elected Assembly of Palestinian Jewry in 1947; from Nikita Khrushchev's unprecedented “secret speech” of 1956 denouncing the excesses of Stalinism, to President John F. Kennedy's inspiring inaugural address of 1961; and from Martin Luther King's epoch-making words at the Lincoln memorial in 1963, to Barack Obama's impassioned oration on race and politics at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia in 2008. Both rousing and thought-provoking, In Our Time offers a unique and fascinating perspective on world history since 1945.

Great book 8 Sep 2009

In Our Time: The Speeches That Shaped the Modern Worldhas great speeches to study, each with historical context.

I did enjoy a lot this one, and it is a great value for its price too. Beautiful book and great text and lots to study and to think about too.

I was at the other end of the Iron Curtain when some of the speeches were delivered, so it was a new discovery for me, as well a good history lesson, not only for "how to make a lasting speech that has impact on our lives!"

famous speeches 27 April 2010
This book records 40 speeches the author considers were important between the years 1945-2008 but the book is quite unbalanced as nearly half are American.
Each speaker is given 5 pages -one for a full page picture,a page for a short history and background, the remaining 3 pages being long extracts of the speech.
Speakers quoted include Churchill, Kennedy,Mandela and Margaret Thatcher.
The book should have started in 1940 when great wartime speeches were made most memorable was Churchills "We will fight them on the beaches............we will never surrender"-the greatest speech of all time.
