Product Description

Review

'Christopher Lloyd ranks with Gertrude Jekyll and Vita Sackville-West as one of the major figures in 20th-century British gardening' The Times 'Exhilarating reading' Penelope Lively, Mail on Sunday 'Discursive, elegant, imaginative and informative' Daily Mail 'This is the man at his best: frank, provoking, erudite and, of course, very funny' Observer

Product Description

Christopher Lloyd has been writing a weekly column in "Country Life" since 1963 and, until now, this wealth of garden literature has been denied to a wider public. There are many garden writers, but few whose work can be considered to have the status of literature. There is only one who has achieved this at the same time as delivering horticultural information which enlightens even the most erudite of plantsmen, and that is Christopher Lloyd. His prose is exciting; his knowledge is vast; his ideas are provocative, and what is the true test of a writer who has transcended his medium, he makes you laugh out loud. In this selection from the storehouse of Christopher Lloyd's prose it will be apparent to what a high degree he has influenced gardening in our times. The book will capture the essence of Christopher Lloyd and of his garden at Great Dixter.

You may have read some of this before - but it's a beautiful compendium, laid out over the twelve months of the year.

Lloyd outrageously replaced Roses with tropical Cannas - you can see it on the cover. His gardens are always buzzing with new things - one of the reasons why they are visited by so many.

This is Lloyd alright - always busy - always fussy - always analysing. This little book enjoyed brilliant editing and presents some funny stuff indeed..

Christopher Lloyd was one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, gardeners of the 20th century. Great Dixter is a mecca for people who like gardens and gardening and this book is for them. It is a collection of articles he wrote for Country Life magazine. He was a funny and sometimes waspish writer...his personality really comes through...and there are nuggets of information about plants, and gardening in general that I find fascinating as well as helpful. Because it is a series of short articles, grouped under seasonal headings, it is easy to dip in and out without losing one's thread. I love it, and have bought copies for some of my gardening friends. It is very reasonably priced, when you consider the cost of some now out-of-print books by Christopher Lloyd, and I'm just wondering whether I should snap up a few more copies while the going's good.

Entertaining book 18 Sep 2010

Bought as a little gift for my gardening mad husband. He was delighted to receive it as he'd just read a review of it in a gardening magazine. He started reading it straight away and has said how interesting it is. Good value for a small book.
