4.0 out of 5 stars I love these books! 29 May 2010
By Emma

I have a 5 month old, I bought 'In My Tree' for him at 3 months old, he loves it, and I love the retro feel, so I bought this one too. I personally prefer the owl and pictures in 'in my tree' - it's so cute - which is why I've only given this one 4 stars. You can put your finger into the little felt animal and make them move. My boy does keep trying to eat the book, and likes to play with the felt animal, but it's sturdy enough to take it! A great book - lovely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect present! 6 Feb 2012

This book (other animals are available from the same author) is gorgeous! I love the finger puppet element which sets it aside from many other children's books. I have bought a couple for friends children and haven't found a disappointing title yet. I also love the fact that they are very family orientated in their subject matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than 'In My Pond' 2 Oct 2009
By L. Johnson - Published on
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
In this series we have this book and In My Pond, which I think was the first. This one is much better. In both books, my kiddo finds the puppet entertaining, but he has no interest in the pictures in 'Pond.' The collages in 'Pond' are really not that eye catching, rather they are quite monotone and homogeneous (e.g. an entire 2-page spread of gray rocks) and apart from the page of rocks, most of that book is aqua blue. However, this is not the case with THIS book. In this one, pages are different scenes with different colors and much more to look at (scenes inside the den, a snow scene outside) with a rabbit, cardinal, beetles and other creatures to search out...or leaves of different colors, pine needles and pine cones. I still think the art is lacking some depth, but this book does seem to have more personality. The text of all of these books is uninspiring and certainly would not hold an older child's attention... but for young toddlers, it's fine...we just play with the puppet, the holes in the pages, and talk about the pictures. My toddler loves this one.

I very much agree with this other review- while the pictures and finger puppets are fabulous, the story is lacking in rhythm or rhyme. Its still cute though.

Bought several books in this series for our grandaughters. They are darling! Love the little movable finger puppets built into the books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hit-or-Miss / age dependent? Magic combo for us! 24 Oct 2011
By Nathaniel Allen - Published on
Format:Board book
Initially I didn't bother to write a review for this book, which we've owned for two-plus years, because our oldest son (now 2) didn't respond strongly to it -- it was just another book on the shelf that we rotated through regularly.

More recently, however, this book has been requested -- frequently -- which my wife and I both found odd because it's geared to the younger crowd, and he's now favoring stories such as In the Night Kitchen and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

The clincher for him (I think) has been the finger puppet. He's really focused on operating it, and pulling it through the various holes in the pages. But what we also observed is that our youngest boy, at 5 months, has really taken an interest in this book. It's the first one he's truly focused on with rapt attention, and we're tickled.

The illustrations are relatively flat and monotone -- they don't "pop" like some of the other early readers with simple illustrations (Freight Train Trip! and Hop on Pop come to mind). BUT they are detailed enough that the older son can count bugs in the pine needles, identify the red cardinal, and point out the tree roots that surround the bear cub's den.

So from that standpoint, it's great having a short and somewhat interactive book that's compatible with two children two years apart.

This is similar to the other "In My" books. It's only about 5 pages but the puppet is very cute, durable and my baby loves it!
