Fans of 70s soul music will appreciate this excellent compilation from a renowned songwriter (this guy wrote hits for a staggering variety of other artists) and underrated recording artist George Jackson. Although he's best known for his songwriting skills, this collection shows that he was a very fine singer and performer too. This is sweet southern soul, in the vein of what Al Green, Percy Sledge, and Johnnie Taylor were doing around the same period. Some songs are spiced with string sections, horns, and a funky guitar riff or two, giving the sound a definite Memphis vibe. I'm shocked I hadn't heard anything by George Jackson before getting this compiliation. But I'm now a fan, and just ordered his Fame Recordings collection also. I can't wait to hear more from guy; A-list songs for sure.
