Book Description

31 Dec 2010
It's an impossibly difficult and painful time; someone you love has just died and you have very quickly to choose an appropriate and moving reading for the funeral. In an increasingly secular age, people often look for a poem or piece of prose which will celebrate the life of the person who has just died, and, as well as inspiring religious poems, Sally Emerson's anthology includes secular words of comfort, celebration and mourning. This collection is also an anthology in its own right, and offers insight into universal emotions These pieces will help to express grief and anger, but also help to understand grieving, and the gradual repair of life after losing a loved one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Presented 28 May 2004
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Sally Emerson has done a great service here for thousands of people. Seeking the right words for a card, letter or speech after the death of a friend or loved one can prove an insurmountable task. Speaking from experience, and having sat for an eternity with a blank sheet of paper, or some meaningless scribbles, this book is exactly what is required. Emerson has collected 200 poems and writings to cover all occasions. The book is divided into sections (Rage, Grief, Parting, Missing, Remembering, Thanksgiving, Facing Eternity, Seeing the Pattern, Inspiration, Love’s Power, Finding Peace, Hymns Prayers & Readings) and is indexed by author and first lines. It contains a diversity of sources from Shakespeare to Churchill, The Bible to The Bhagavad Gita and Joan Baez to Rupert Brooke. You don’t have to copy anything from the book in your time of need, but it will inspire you and may help the right words to drop into place. I bought this book, not just to have around when a death occurred, but for the inspirational passages and the sheer joy of reading the thoughts of others. To me this is a coffee table book full of love and encouragement and I recommend it to everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Help when needed 15 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This book is extremely useful when organising a funeral. It is difficult at times to put into words how you feel about someone when they have just passed away. I found this very thought provoking and an emotional crutch at a difficult time.

'In Loving Memory is a true inspiration'. As an artist relies on good tools to build a mosaic of life - this book offers many options to share and help create a comforting moasic in times of need. 'In Loving Memory reminds just how many ways there are to remember and is such a well put together selection of words to give comfort, hope, solace in the often turbulent waters of grief. A fantastic accomplishment of depth, thoughtfullness in its presentation and insight and compassion. Revd. Haynes

5.0 out of 5 stars Memory of Love 24 Dec 2010

Keep this by your side and you will never feel that you are taking too long to grieve. The world moves on, and we who grieve are rooted in the past, longing for our reality to be a dream from which we wake to discover all is as it was, and we haven't lost a loved one.
This beautiful book will help you as you begin your journey back to life.
