Oldshaw, 1929; when you could enjoy a night out at the Theatre Royal, a pint in the interval, a hot pie on the way home - and still have change from a shilling. You could also have an argument with a brewer's dray and end up as a client of Jeremiah Unsworth and Co., Undertakers and Monumental Masons... and be given one of the most disastrous funerals in the long and noble history of undertaking. Thora Hird (Talking Heads, Last of the Summer Wine) brings her inimitable humour to the role of Ivy Unsworth, widow of funeral director Jeremiah, who has been left to run Unsworth and Co. along with her accident-prone nephew, Billy (Christopher Beeny - Upstairs Downstairs). A much-loved comedy series set in a fictional Lancashire mill town, In Loving Memory was a huge success for Yorkshire Television, running for five series between 1979 and 1986; this complete set, featuring guest appearances by Richard Wilson, Joan Sims, Liz Smith, Geoffrey Bayldon and Victor Maddern, comprises every episode and includes the Christmas Special from 1982.

a competent cast, gentle humour and uncomplicated plots, sheer enjoyment from Dame Thora Hurd, they really do not make them like this any more. This series has not been repeated on television for many years, I did think that i may have imagined it to be better that it is, but no it is as enjoyable as it ever was and being set in the 1920's/1930's it has not dated at all. Well worth a look.

As a child I was fortunate enough to live in Luddenden where this TV Series was filmed. In our school holidays, we used to go and watch them film this and met most of the cast. Christopher Beeney once gave us a fiver between four of us. In them days we used to get 25p each a week, so a Fiver was like Xmas come early. Its great to see all the places where they filmed this, In fact the opening shot on the first episode is one with our school on, which is now longer not in use. Brilliant, on par with other British Comedy classics such as last of the summer wine, only this one was in Our neck of the woods. AND ITS NOT LANCASHIRE!!!! Its Yorkshire!!!!

When thinking of a situation comedy scenario, a funeral directors/parlour does not automatically spring to mind. This ism however, precisely where you will find yourself with 'In Loving Memory' and you'll find that there are many opportunities for comedy in such a place. Some people might be afraid that such a setting for a comedy is disrespectful but the humour is delicate, perfectly balanced and wonderfully written. If you think about life in general and all its ridiculousness, then I think that a funeral parlour is one of the best places to set a comedy.
Thora Hird is wonderful and plays her role to perfection. Christopher Beeny as her nephew is in probably his best role here. The interactions between the two are perfect, though Hird really is in a class of her own. Guest stars do a great job but this is really a show centred on Ivy Unsworth and her nephew Billy.
If you want something gentle to brighten your day, then buy this DVD set which comprises all of the episodes from all of the series and have a chuckle.

i am old enough to remember this when it was shown on tv back in the days when comedy was good clean fun as always thora hird is superb and christopher beeney is great,it might seem strange to make a comedy about undertakers but with good writing and acting it works,if you like rising damp, barbara and comedys of that like you will love this

Bought this for my dad as he's now at an age where he sits in his chair all day long with just the TV for company! I can remember watching some of these episodes as a kid, and from what I've watched so far I've found it to be a real tonic. Five discs, each with aprox' seven episodes this is going to take some time to get through. Loads of familiar faces you will recognise before they came famous in other things. Thora is just brilliant. Not just filmed totally in a studio but also outside around Yorkshire where I live. The subject matter may seam a little dark, but all the family can watch this as it is far from all doom and gloom. Considering when it was made I found it to be a chuckle to watch. My dad can't remember what he did yesterday! but things from the past such as these brings back a little bit of spark and a smile so this was a fantastic purchase for the money, by next week he'll have forgotten he's watched them so I'll be able to play them all again!
