In my opinion The Color Purple is one of the best books ever written and its impact on black, female writing cannot be underestimated. Walker can always tell a tale based on madness, oppression and poverty in a completely compelling, original way. Where many authors would submerge themselves in self-pity she writes how it is to be poor, black and female without wallowing in sentiment or proportioning blame. She leaves the reader to make up their mind on how to interpret her stories. All her characters are individuals coping with their lot in different ways- sometimes turning the tables, sometimes suffering horrendously for the sins others perceive them to have.
This is a very engaging book and also very moving. Highly recommended.
