In The Long RunIn the Long Run is a first novel about courage, determination and, at some points, sheer bloody-mindedness. A story thats not unlike that of its author - George Stratford.
A few years ago, In the Long Run was the only thing that kept George going every day. After spending all his savings on a trip to South Africa to research his novel, he returned home only to find that he no longer had a job. At 47, he was not just unemployed, but after repeated failures to find work, was also made to feel unemployable. It was only the promise he had made to himself to write 1,000 words a day that kept him going.
Eventually, life took an upturn and deciding to do a course in advertising, he landed a dream three week placement at top advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi. Although he had hardly any money left, George decided it would be worth it to spend his last money on the train fare from Cornwall up to London. With nowhere to stay and no money, he had no choice but to sleep rough. Each night when he finished work, he walked the streets and slept on a park bench. When an account director found him one morning stripped to the waist cleaning his teeth, he admitted what was going on and Saatchis immediately gave him some money. And his luck didnt stop there; before his placement finished, Saatchi offered him a job - a rare enough achievement for someone young, let alone a middle-aged ex-French polisher. He is still there, now as a copywriter working on Saatchis major campaigns.
In the Long Run is the novel that George wrote when he was at his lowest ebb. Set against the backdrop of one of the worlds most arduous races, South Africas Comrades Marathon, In the Long Run is a story of hope, betrayal, murder, pain and love. When the final reckoning comes, none of the central characters will ever be capable of regarding life in quite the same way.
In the Long Run will be published by Citron Press in March 2000 as an original paperback.
