Book Description

15 May 2000
This work contains 200 photographs including over 100 scenes of working horses and horsemen, a wide range of threshing and steam traction engine shots, roots and cereal harvesting, shepherds, rural tradesmen and village people. Taken from 1925 to 1933 in Suffolk, they create a vivid portrait of the farm-centred rural life of the time, and they are accompanied by informative captions. The Titshall brothers, Leonard and Ralph, were commercial photographers based in Ipswich. Leonard travelled around the countryside in a motorcycle and sidecar capturing shots of working people as they paused from their labours. Since the book was first published in June 1999, fresh information has come to light about the scenes and people it records. This information has been incorporated in this second edition. One of the most striking identifications is that of Sam Fuller, photographed in 1926 in his working clothes having just started on the farm in which he was to remain for over 62 years. Sam still lives in the village street where he was born 90 years ago.

3.0 out of 5 stars a nice book 15 Oct 2011

i really enjoy the book, but its a bit samey, all the images are very formal and of the same style, which isnt nescissarily a bad thing. a good read, and shows the past exactly how it was. good for people that are looking into farming history in east anglia, but a lot about the machinery and horses and not many other animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous look back on Suffolk life 22 Feb 2011

This is a beautiful book, "beautiful" because it allows you a glimpse of life in Suffolk, on farms, in villages and towns, in a bygone era. Sadly lots of the photos used have no names to put to the people or places in them, but that doesn't stop the reader from being transported back in time and wondering about what happened to all the people shown. From the fascinating uses of horses on farms, with all their varying harnesses, to the clothing of the women and children in poorer labourer families. Each photo has a small paragraph describing the activity and/or people in them. The book has chapters, sectioning each area of life and/or occupation. There isn't much that could be improved on in the book, other than maybe being a bit bigger scale to see more detail in the old photographs.
