Product Description

Product Description

Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, formerly of Tussle & The Alps. As an emblem of Alexis' commitment to "natural electronic music'' (bridging the natural and electronic worlds), nearly all of In Light was recorded live. Very few loops were used - in fact, only one. This gesture was meant to bring back some of the rough (re: natural) edges that have been lost in so much "Electronic Music'' today. In Light is a luminous album of warm, pulsing music. Like dreams or rich, saturated moments that make one lose sense of time, they are grainy snapshots, like old films of one's own experiences, elevated moments. Call it Pop Minimalism. Call it Cosmic Pop. Call it Cosmic Minimalism. Call it what you will.

BBC Review

Arp is Alexis Georgopoulus, San Francisco based artist, writer and musician best known for being one of the founding members of dance-punk outfit, Tussle. Carrying on with some of the minimalistic tendencies of his former band, In Light is never overtly bleak, but rather barren in sound and devoid of any of the audio nuances usually associated within the electronic genre. Opening track 'St Tropez', with its mindless repetition sounds akin to the noise an eight year old might make if given a pulse machine, a synthesizer and a cassette recorder. Although this simplicity is usually a refreshing escape from the often frenetic world of beeps and glitches that electronic music is so usually littered with, the scaled back nature of this album seems joyless in the extreme.

Instead of being some audio revelation, the absence of drum machines and bass make for soulless listening: the very heart seems to be missing. 'Potentialities' makes and attempt at trying to inject some warmth into the proceedings, but all attempts fall flat: the complete overuse of syths would have even sounded ridiculous in a late 70s television programme. The overwhelming impression brought to the fore is that this is merely art for art's sake, and there is no palpable passion here, just an audacious art experiment, which doesn't quite work. In Light is the size zero of albums: despite being frighteningly chic, it is just bones surrounding by a thin covering of flesh. There is certainly no meat to get hold of here nor is there any trace of warmth emanating from this emaciated frame.

In Light shoots towards to early Kraftwerk and Cluster, and at points you think that it could reach those lofty heights, but, it misses the goal posts by miles. Despite heralding from those sun-drenched shores of California, which are so synonymous with images of sun, sand and that So-Cal carefree attitude, In Light seems a little cold and contrived by comparison. A little too monotonous for clubs and bars and too barren sounding to listen to by yourself, this is a sonic experiment without too much experimenting. --Kate Sharp

4.0 out of 5 stars Arp- In Light Review (8/10) 8 Oct 2007
Format:Audio CD
Arp is the most recent project of Alexis Georgopoulos, the founding member of rhythmic experimentalists `Tussle' and improvising collective `The Alps'. Since his role in `Tussle', Alexis has left behind his bass and drums to concentrate on experimenting with analog synthesisers, pulse machines, flute, piano, pedals and an old 4-track cassette recorder. If these sound like the ingredients to a `komische' 70's progressive minimalist dirge then you'd be spot on, because `In Light' is an ode to the warm, reverberating soundscapes of the ultra-creative Seventies period. In order to create `natural sounding music', nearly all of `In Light' was recorded live and only one loop was used in the entire process.

The opener `St Tropez' sets the scene by creating a dense soundscape which drifts past slowly with a tangible air of enchanted mysticism. On `Potentialities', micro-melodies and deep expanding synths ride a propulsive wave of motorik synths to create a mind-expanding slice of minimalist psychedelica which recall the strongest works of Cluster or Tangerine Dream. The appropriately titled `The Rising Sun' showcases gently played and clustered keys over a throbbing and expanding bed of haunted droneage. `Fireflies on the Water' comes across as a bridge track and its overly bouncy synths however the tightly clustered, bubbling analog synthesisers burst into life with the Franco Battiato inspired `Premonition of the Scupltor Steiner' which sounds like the score to a psychedelic space-explorers tale of adventure.

The real centrepiece of the album is the multi-dimensional 15 minute epic, `Odyssey (For Bas Jan Ader). Alexis shoots strategically arranged slow-motion darts of synthesiser and hollowed phaser effects to enthral the listener into a parallel universe glistening with exoticism.

3.0 out of 5 stars Arp - In Light 26 Oct 2011
By scoundrel - Published on
Format:Audio CD
For an album coming off the Nordic electronica powerhouse Smalltown Supersound, Arp's IN LIGHT starts off on a simple enough note: the delicate ambient tones of "St. Tropez." "The Rising Sun" has a slow drone with a tickling piano line -- like watching a slow sunrise -- while "Fireflies On The Water" has a tipsiness to it, as if all the fireflies were drunk. A hint of electro swagger creeps into "Premonition Of The Sculptor Steiner," giving the track a certain 70s space-music quality, while the long "Odyssey (For Bas Jan Ader)" is an extended meditation, refracting some simple chords for the length of the track. The cello that punctuates "Potentialities II" adds a classical elegance as well. Quite a dreamy piece of work.
