Those already familiar with the highly successful collaboration of legendary Lakeland fell walker Alfred Wainwright and photographer Derry Brabbs will relish this fascinating account of how each of their seven books was produced.
Brabbs' in a witty and engaging style recounts how he battled the elements to capture perfect images of the Lakeland mountains, Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast Walk and Scotland, guided by Wainwright's notes. The book is sumptuously illustrated with Brabbs' stunning photographs, some of which have appeared in the earlier publications, though most are new.
The photographs alone are reason enough to purchase this book and any budding landscape photographer keen to develop their skill will do well to study these images and marvel at Brabbs' mastery of the subject.
The book is of larger format with better production standards than the previous publications; I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it.

I live in Dorset so my knowledge of the Lakes, the Pennine Way and the Highlands is limited but I do enjoy walking and I have visited some of the places featured in this excellent book.I also like to take a few snapshots when I'm out walking but am by no means an expert photographer.
This book appealed to me in three different ways : first of all the photos were absolutely stunning and reminded me of the places I have visited such as the Langdales and Slater's Bridge as well as giving me plenty of ideas of where to go next.
Secondly the photographic advice was at just the right level for me : not overly technical or long-winded, just a few simple sentences describing the considerations Mr Brabbs took into account when he took the photo. e.g. "This shot of cliff scenery near Robin Hood's Bay was enhanced by the effect of low early morning sun on the foreground and the rest of the frame remaining dark".
And finally, a really pleasant unexpected bonus for a book of this type, the narrative was a joy to read and very witty. Anybody who manages to include the joke about the Fukawe Pygmy tribe in their book gets my vote !

I wouldn't normally expect a book of this type to be such a page turner, but I found myself unable to put it down until I'd read the entire book in just a few days. The book starts with Derry's early photographic career, how he became a landscape and outdoor photographer and goes on to describe his many collaborations with Wainwright.
The photography is excellent throughout and includes honest appraisals from the author. However, the book is not a technical manual and the descriptions of how and why the images were made is brief and I think it's all the better for this.
The text is engaging, includes many amusing annecdotes and describes the many frustrations we have all faced when trying to make great images in the fells. Highly recommended for anyone who has an interest in either outdoor photography or the hills and mountains of the UK.
