Book Description

17 Jan 2008
Award-winning food writer Stefan Gates has travelled the world to investigate how people cook, eat and survive in extreme conditions for the acclaimed BBC television series Cooking in the Danger Zone. He drank radioactive wine with babushkas in Chernobyl, ate fat-tailed sheep with Taliban warlords in Afghanistan, yak’s penis with Chinese Communists, civet cat with the Karen rebels deep in the Burmese jungle and rotting walrus with the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. In this book Stefan takes us on an extraordinary personal journey as he tries to understand a world in crisis, and meets people caught up in war, poverty and environmental disasters. This behind-the-scenes account is hugely entertaining and thought provoking, blending war and food, ethics and emotions, comedy and tragedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cultural expeditions of a pseudo-chef 19 Feb 2008
Format:Hardcover
This really would appeal to anyone interested in food, travel and current affairs. Written as a follow up to the BBC Four program "Cooking in the Danger Zone", it offers a deeper insight into the locations visited in each episode. Broken down into chapters for each location, some are more appealing than others. My favourite happens to be Stefan's dilema over whether or not to eat dog in Korea, and the way he procrastinates over the idea throughout the chapter. Some of the chapters are less light-hearted but are eye-opening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! 21 April 2011
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book because I enjoyed the TV series and I cannot recommend it enough. It reminds me of the Michael Palin travel books and is very well written. At times it is very upsetting but Stefan Gates really gives you an insight into the cultures of the places he is visiting. I couldn't put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of the frying pan, into the fire. 3 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
Stefan's journey is a fascinating one. He is a brave man venturing into war zones where food and resources are scarce. He admits his fears along the journey which made me warm to the author.

The chapter on bushmeat in Cameroon was highly informative. The local people are ex-forest dwellers who prize the meat from chimps, gorillas and other simians. He describes well the conflicts around whim which are sometimes exacerbated by the simple act of cooking food in villages or refugee camps where people have not eaten for days.

I now intend to download the accompanying tv series.
