Biography

How do you build a narrative for a story as rich and multifaceted as the life of Joan Baez? Baez herself is not especially inclined to introspection, or to the backwards glance. Often wrongly perceived as a naïve idealist, she is, in her own distinctive way, a pragmatist to the core with her eyes fixed squarely on what’s right in front of her. As an activist, she has viewed her life ... Read more in Amazon's Joan Baez Store

Oh this is so beautiful - the songs, the respectful audience and her pristine voice! There's an almost spiritual quality to the songs Kumbaya, Gospel Ship and the eery Lady Mary, a strange medieval ballad, while the Portuguese song Até Amanha is an uptempo, singalong ditty and Pretty Boy Floyd soars above the clouds. This is pure poetry, infused with a spirit of transcendence. A very sensitive and moving listening experience, showing the beauty and the power of early 1960's folk music.

Black Is The Colour of My True Love's Hair has got to be one of the most "sung" of all folk songs. After hearing Joan's version, however, all the other versions I've heard throughout my life seem laughable, a joke almost and pale in comparison. This is THE definitive version. It is simply stunning. Brings tears to your eyes.
The fact that this is a CD made up of live performances is only a testament to how talented she was (and still is). Her voice here is at its most beautiful, as it was recorded back in 1962 when here "achingly pure soprano" was at its absolute best. She lost a lot of her range in the 70s so one really experiences her voice in its prime in her earlier recordings: Joan Baez, Joan Baez Vol. 2, In Concert, In Concert Vol 2, Noel etc. Basically, everything she recoreded in the 60s.
The collection of songs here is varied and wonderful. I especially love her versions of Geordie (you can actually FEEL her despair), House Carpenter, Matty Groves and Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You. And Black is the Colour, of course.
This is about as good as music gets. Joanie, how do you do it?

In this CD, we hear the young Joan, singing with an achingly pure soprano voice that has the power to reach into your very heart and touch your deepest emotions. From her rendering of the well known spiritual, 'Kumbya' in which she invites her audience to participate; resulting in an exceptionally beautiful piece of harmonising by Joan; to the more traditional Child ballads for the folk purist/traditionalist,the Joan Baez in Concert CD has something for everyone. Throughout the album, Joan's only accompnyment is her acoustic guitar, which she plays with exceptional ability for one so young at the time of the recording. Indeed, this album is almost worth buying just to listen to Joans guitar style in its own right - she is a true virtuoso of this insturment. I would not hesitate to recommmend this album to anyone who enjoys the traditional folk music of our forebears, be they from the UK or the USA.

This is a live concert recording, so be prepared for clapping and an enthusiastic reception by the concert crowds. It is quintessential early Joan Baez, simply strumming her guitar and singing folk songs that she loves. It was recorded at various concerts during her tours in August 1962 and October/November 1963.
Her clear, sweet soprano is exquisite, and her choice of these thirteen folk songs should satisfy the most ardent purists. Truly, hers is the voice of an angel. For those of us who grew up with the music of Joan Baez, this recording is a glorious trip down memory lane.
The quality of this cd is what one may expect from such an early, live recording, as it suffers from an occasional lack of clarity and from a slight variance in volume from song to song. Still, this is a cd that all devoted fans of Ms. Baez will want to include in their collection, if only for her wistful rendition of "What Have They Done To the Rain".

I'm getting on a bit and heard 'em all....Always come back to Joan Baez for this era because she was the greatest female singer and interpreter of great songs. Not head anything better. Her first 5 records are just beautiful.
