The Agatha Witchley Mysteries

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Book 1 of the Company of Ghosts series

Because sometimes, insanity and genius are indistinguishable...

Agatha Witchley used to be a spy in the Cold War, but now she's locked up in the UK's premier maximum-security mental institution. She believes that the ghosts of the celebrity dead visit her padded cell and whisper the world's secrets in her ears. Which is a big problem for the British government, because she's the only one who can help them when an American billionaire is murdered in London in one of the strangest killings yet.

The Home Secretary needs the case locked down and solved before the entrepreneur’s death becomes public knowledge and economic chaos ensures.

The woman he has in mind for the job might be paranoid, she might be lethal, she might half-insane and drawing a pension, but it's amazing how you can forgive that in a genius when it's a genius's help you need.

Yes, the security forces need Agatha Witchley again. It's just the ghosts of Churchill, Elvis and Groucho Marx they could do without.

A deadly effective thriller

This is the novella that starts the Agatha Witchley series, a high-octane crime series which puts me in mind of the better Dirk Pitt books. A touch of gangbusters and a touch of the Avengers (the old British TV series, rather than the Marvel comic and now movie). It also reminds me a little of one of those French graphic novels like Tintin, but with more adult themes. A quirky take on the genre, with an assemble of intriguing characters, including the slightly insane Agatha Witchley, as well as her ex-legionnaire sidekick, and their fellow agents from the mysterious Office.

In this book, Agatha is investigating the death of a Steve Jobs-like computer billionaire, but as always, there's more going on than meets the eye. I would very much like to see the rest of these books in e-book format.

The plot is quirky, and, once you get used to the idea, extremely gripping. All the more disappointing, therefore, to discover that the book suddenly stops, about 4 paragraphs into a new scenario, at 92% of the download, with the coy "And the story continues...". This is not a novella, this is an episode, and I feel cheated and almost betrayed. The author should consider that, if he wishes to gain and then maintain reader loyalty, he has to play fair, not just in terms of his plot-line, but also to reader expectations. While leaving a plot in limbo at the end of an episode of a TV serial is conventional, and expected, that really is not the case in a book, unless it is clearly spelt out in the blurb. While the plot and characters are engaging enough that I might well invest 77p in what will, in reality, be Episode 2, I am left with the suspicion that this ploy will continue, and that the price of each instalment will increase. I've given 4 stars because of the plot quality, but am extremely disappointed by the abrupt non-ending - and amazed that most other reviewers either don't mention it, or don't find it peculiar.
