Product Description

Review

A rare pleasure (Daily Telegraph )

Forget the library - the body is in the mud hut. An African Miss Marple created by a Scottish lawyer . . . superb (Sunday Times )

One of the most entrancing literary treats of many a year (Wall Street Journal )

A strong, independent, and endearing model for contemporary women anywhere . . . A crowded fictional genre will have to make room for Precious Ramotswe. In the best sense possible, she's a heavyweight (Boston Globe )

Book Description

* Highly original 'detective' stories with unique setting and characters featuring Mma Ramotswe and her No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Superb 8 Dec 2004
By Claretta VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I've read all the Ladies' Detective Agency books, and enjoyed them all, but I agree with the reviewers who thought this was the best one so far. The writing seems to me to be more assured, the characters more rounded, and the plotting more convincing. All in all, a delight - I just wish the book had been twice as long! I do hope it isn't the last in the series as two new characters have been introduced, plus there are the orphans ... would love to know more about them. Keep writing, Mr McCall Smith!

Incredibly fabulous! 27 Sep 2004

Format:Hardcover
Thank you to Alexander McCall Smith, this was well worth the wait. Rather than losing steam this book gathers a momentum only matched by the very first in the series (which got me hooked). Every chapter takes you to another level and the author manages to do this without keeping you in painful suspense. Almost as if you just happen upon it and then you are so glad you did. I'll say no more. You must read it for yourself. What an ending!! I thought all the great books had been written, and now here I am pining for more. Mr Smith, don't let me wait too long for the next one please.

Return to form. 12 Oct 2004
By K. Gale
Format:Hardcover
It seemed to me that books 3 and 4 had lost some the initial sparkle of the No. 1 Ladies Detective agency, but Cheerful Ladies manages to capture the original atmosphere and has a compelling plot involving Precious Ramotswe's first husband.
I'm very glad that Alexander McCall Smith had added to the series after what looked like the end and, while I would love to see another book, this is exactly the high note to finish on.

The pinnacle of the series so far
In previous No. 1 Ladies' Detective books, I have always thought that it did not matter if you had not read the previous ones, as they filled you in nicely on all the background. Read more

My Favourite So Far!
I really enjoyed this book and I don't know whether the author's sense of humour has grown on me or whether this book was particulary funny, but I found myself laughing a lot. Read more
