For those who think Anne Fine writes for children only, think again! As usual she hooked me from the first sentence in this story of a disfunctional family, headed up by a domineering mother who chooses to destroy the pieces of the much loved family garden every time she is upset or thwarted. The reactions of her grown up children and their partners to both this and the news that their docile and unattractive sister is marrying a stunning spaniard forms the basis of the book. I love the characters Anne Fine creates, their barely hidden bitterness and selfishness provides more bite than you usually get in a family saga and makes them highly realistic. Very enjoyable.
