Product Description

THE SLITS'IN THE BEGINNING'(A Live Anthology 1977-81),The most influential, groundbreaking female punk band ever! ,Debuting with their 1977 tour with The Clash,The Slits were known for their uncompromising attitude and aggressive and confrontational music; to this day they are cited as being hugely inspiring to many female artists. But even their seminal Island Records 1979 debut album 'Cut',with its infamous sleeve featuring the band members naked and caked in mud, does not capture the true energy and spontaneity as well as these live recordings do. ,The album spans from an early, chaotic 1977 punk-era show which includes their classics such as 'Shoplifting','New Town' and 'Love & Romance',shows how they evolved into their dubby,reggae-influenced style with songs such as 'Typical Girls',and finishes with a track from their last ever performance in 1981. Over its fifteen tracks it features guest vocals from Neneh Cherry and Nina Hagen, inspired covers of John Holt's 'Man Next Door' and Marvin Gaye's 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine',and four songs heard for the first time*. The best way to hear The Slits is live, and rough as uncut diamonds. Contains booklet notes by Mick Mercer. 15 TRACKS: ,Vindictive,A Boring Life*,Slime*,New Town,Love & Romance,Shoplifting,Number One Enemy* (all from 1977); Number One Enemy (acoustic)* (guest vocal from Nina Hagen); In The Beginning,New Town,Man Next Door,I Heard It Through The Grapevine,Typical Girls,Fade Away*,(1980); In The Beginning (guest vocal from Neneh Cherry) (1981). Five stars, but... 18 Feb 2008
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I give this five stars, because it is quite simply brilliant, but I don't think that this is the place to start listening to the Slits. My advice would be to know (and love) "Cut" before approaching this album.

Before buying the album, I wondered whether 8 low-fi punk era tracks, followed by 7 hi-fi dub era tracks would work as a whole. Weirdly, it works very well. And the more often I listen, the better it works.

In my opinion the Slits second best album, 'In the Beginning' is an odd mixture of some brilliant tracks, along with a few very mediocre tracks. The excellent 'Vindictive' and 'Boring life' show the Slits at their best, but tracks such as 'Shoplifting' are uninspired to say the least.

If you're new to the punk era, I would avoid this album, but for hardened punks, its a valuable addition to your collection.

Yes! A stunningly accurate document . . . 30 Dec 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
There are two halves to this CD - one of the early, pre-Cut punk stuff, one of the later more overtly reggae/African influenced stuff. This is an accurate depicition of the band at these stages, full of irreverance and spastic musical joy. I love the Slits and saw them several times, this is more like what they were than any of their studio recordings manage to express.

Better than "Cut" 30 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
These live recordings are much more interesting than the studio versions. The "punk era" performances are best, the later versions are less exciting. Overall, a good introduction to the band. It's just a pity that Budgie doesn't appear.

HALF GOOD 14 Jan 2005
By JUAN MARTIN GABASTOU - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The first 6 songs are intense riot/punk stuff, live in 77,and they rule. The 7th song is "acoustic" though it features nothing but an acoustic guitar and dual Ari Up&Nina Hagen vocals. The "dub era" songs are downright boring and don't even sound like dub to me (at least in the reggae sense of the word).I guess the cd is OK for the first 6 tracks, just not exactly the best bang for the buck.
