Book Description

15 Dec 2005
There has probably never been anything like it in UFO history, but the UFO fever that gripped the small British town of Warminster for about a decade is now largely forgotten. It was one of the largest UFO flaps ever to occur. Thousands of witnesses reported seeing the "Warminster Thing." The hilltops around the town attracted a loyal band of followers, all waiting for the magic sighting, the landing, the contact. The authors were themselves among the skywatchers and spent nights on Cradle Hill, the center of the phenomenon, watching and waiting for UFOs, but also watching and listening to the witnesses and ufologists. IN ALIEN HEAT introduces the Warminster phenomenon to a new generation of readers. It contains a short history of the phenomenon, places it in its social and historical context, and examines the possible mechanisms that initiated and sustained this remarkable UFO flap. "Some of the dullest books ever published have flying saucers on their cover. This book isn't one of them. Since 1947 UFO related beliefs have spread across the world like a modern legend. Stories about objects in the sky and alien contacts have become part of popular culture. But virtually all discussion about UFOs has been confined to either belief in 'alien visitors' or debunking ET claims. IN ALIEN HEAT takes a fresh approach to the subject. Steve Dewey and John Ries take a microcosm of the UFO phenomenon - the Warminster Mystery - and examine it as a social and cultural phenomenon akin to modern folklore. This is a fascinating and absorbing book which should be read by everyone who wants to know 'the truth' behind the UFO mystery." - Dr. David Clarke, National Centre for English Cultural Tradition, University of Sheffield First time in print! 4.0 out of 5 stars A view from the other side of the hill 23 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
I have been involved with the Warminster enigma for over 30 years, and was a stalwart of the 70s skywatching crowd. I met Steve Dewey way back in October 1976, on a fog shrouded Cradle Hill. I was even then, impressed by his knowledge of the phenomenon. It came as no surprise when I realised that Steve had written a book about the subject, although nearly 30 years late!
Steve and John approach the mystery from a social/cultural/historical view - and uncover a wealth of information. The book is, by it's nature, a skeptical one. But, from one who has also written a book on Warminster, although from the other side of the fence, Steve and John should be applauded for their work.
For anyone who remembers those halycon days, or has an interest in British Ufology, I can whole-heartedly recommend this book.
Thanks to this book, I contacted Steve Dewey, and because of our mutual interest in the Warminster Mystery, Steve and I now run a website, ufo-warminster, which, we hope, over time will chronicle the enigma that appeared to haunt this quiet Wiltshire town in the 1960s and 1970s.

5.0 out of 5 stars A different interpretation... 1 Sep 2006
Format:Paperback
I found this book a complete breath of fresh air! Having read much about the Warminster Mystery, (a local interest to me) I thought that what had been published before would remain the only investigations available. In Alien Heat is no rehash of old material - It invites you to take a fresh look at events surrounding the phenomena from a totally objective viewpoint. The authors' local knowledge and characters shine through with a welcome degree of humour when appropriate, but without detracting from the facts presented and their comments and thoughts. What I found particularly fascinating was the considerations on how British society viewed Shuttlewood and others publishings at the time. The book compels you to re-visit all the information and witness accounts some 30-40 years after it caused so much fuss in this small West Country market town. What a great mystery read!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A nostalgic read 6 Jan 2013
By Peter
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a regular sky watcher on Cradle Hill myself between 1967 and 1972 I found the book very entertaining in its descriptions of activities on Cradle Hill and Arthur Shuttlewood's enthiusiasm. The atmosphere of expectancy and awe conveyed in the book's descriptions of skywatchers on the hill is absolutely spot on and reading about all the familiar names of the people invoved at the time was a real trip down Memory Lane. Regarding the whole affair, I had already come to many of the same conclusions as the writers myself.

However, the book is a little repetitive in places and I am not sure it would hold so much interest for people who were not personally involved in the Warminster Mystery. But, well done guys, I enjoyed it.
